i searched the archive, but didnt find much, tutorial-wise. i have a jazz neck and a pearly gates bridge that i want to cover. on of the covers came in from guitar electronics a few days ago.

1. the holes in the cover.... do i take the screws out of the pup and run them threw?
2. someone mentioned tape over the bobbins...huh?
3. wax?

im thinking of sending them to the custom shop

It's not a problem, you just need to make sure that the hole spacing in the covers is the same as the pole sapcing of the pickups. I'm not sure if Seymour duplicates the Gibson and Fender spacings, there are at least three different Gibson pole spacings, the default being 50mm I believe and there is also a 48mm and a 52mm.

Providing that you specify the pickup you are ordering the cover for there shouldn't be any incompatibility, your dealer should be providing you with the right cover for that pickup.

You don't need to remove the screws normally, but it may help to screw them out about 3mm to give the cover something to register on.

You need to take the outer layer of fabric tape off and clean up the locating tabs on the baseplate. You need to get these very clean as you will be soldering to them. Only take the outermost layer of tape off as the coil terminals are soldered on to the black and white lead wires and these are covered by small lengths of tape which can become dislodged if you go to far or too heavy handed.

Push the cover on to the pickup until the screw heads emerge fully through the holes in the cover. The bottom edge of the cover should be flush with the baseplate or protrude about 1mm below it.

Scrub the gap between the baseplate and the inside of the cover along each of the long sides of the pickup with something like P120 grade abrasive paper.

You need a fairly powerful soldering iron for the next bit; I find anyhting less than 40w vrey hard work.

Apply heat and solder to the scrubbed joint until the solder wets the surface of the joint. This is tricky as all the thin metal plates act as heat sinks and dissipate the heat from the soldering iron quite quickly. Do this on both sides.

Job done.

You can wax them afterwards if you want to, but go easy as wax can get hot enough to soften acetate bobbins and i'm not sure whether the Pearly Gates are acetate or polycarb...

thanks!

i need to take the tape off? i didnt know that....

Interesting... I´ve never needed to remove the tape.....

but otherwise I agree with everything OcDoc said, very good explanation of the process...

Re: how do you put (sd) covers on a (sd) pup?

You may or may not have to take the tape off. But often you do have to remove at least the cloth tape...just depends.

I always take a piece of 1/2" masking tape and put it INSIDE the cover...NOT on the bobbins.

I put the tape in the area where the non adjustable slug polepieces will be under the cover...but I put the tape in the cover...NOT on the bobbins.

The purpose of the tape is twofold:

1. It acts as a dampening material to minimize microphonics or squeeling caused by the cover vibrating if you're playing really loud and standing in front of your amp. Takes the place of wax potting to some extent.

2. It makes it impossible for the slug poles to rattle against the inside of the cover if they're pressed tightly against it.

I use a clamp to clamp the cover on as tightly as possible and then I solder the cover on while it's in the clamp.

If you are a bit (understandably) nervous about removing the tape, you actually only need to remove it from the upturned side tabs. You could try getting the cover on over it, it might just fit.

Re: how do you put (sd) covers on a (sd) pup?

yah, the covers do fit, straightaway...

thanks lew, i remember reading that you use tape instead... but it wasnt clear that the tape goes on the inside(?) of the cover and not on the pup...why is that?
