How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

With high gain I tend to I tend to turn mine on, find a spot I like, and park it there.

I'll also run a fuzz in front of it and rock it with the attack so that it sounds similar to an evelope follower.

And I'll sometimes to the whakka whakka whakka thing with muted cleans and delay.

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

hmmm thanks for the responses guys

What exactly is bad about the dunlop cry baby wah? What are some good choices? Oh and one more thing, are there even adjustment knobs on the dunlop cr baby to change the sound? or is it simply press on it and it does its job?

The lower end Crybabys sound like sh*t. It's the only way I can describe it.

What are some good choices?

Some of the better Crybabys are any of the ones that come with a Fazel inductor, and the Dime Bag series.

Some wahs have an adjustable Q, which lets you adjust the center frequency of the wah up or down (just try it, you'll understand what I mean). Other's have an adjustable boost, which is great if you use your wah to help your solos cut through. Some (Teese RMC3) have dip switches that let you re-voice the wah to suit your needs.

But yeah.....once all the knobs/switches are set, you pretty much just step on it and it does it's job.

Kirk Hammet and Slash supposedly use 'em... I Love my Crybaby From Hell

I use it for solos mainly just for some effect... it's the only effect of any kind I've got.

Rock On~!~

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

I got two used crybabys and they both sound great. You have to try them to find a good one as they all sound different. I played several crap Crybabys before I got the ones I did. 40.00 a pop. been great for me for several years now.

I've seen somebody on another forum post it like this

The stock Cry Baby sweeps like this:

...................waw....................

Wheras a decent wah sweeps like this:

WWWHHHUUUAAAOOOHHHWWW

The Cry Baby does have a great encolosure, build your own thing inside there or if you can't, buy a board from this chap:

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

I love my Pro Analog Supa Quack (that thing is amazing and if anybody wants the best boutique wah out there, they should definitely try it).

I try to use my wah sparingly. I'm the kind of guy that laughs at bands that "need" it every song (yes, I said "need" it). If you can't play a solo without using it to help cover up your playing mistakes, then you really need to put the pedal away. With that said, when you're doing improv jams, it's a great tool to mess around with (I just make sure to not overdo it). Messing with funk stuff is a blast also!

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

Do you guys put your wah BEFORE or AFTER the rest of your effects pedal?

Pros and cons?

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

I always liked the tone of the stock Dunlop Crybabys but the main problem with those is they just don't last! You're lucky to get a year out of one before the pot is crackling on you... after that it never sounds the same.

I love the wah effect, it's a must have in my arsenal. So I bit the bullet and put down $260 for my Fulltone Clyde Deluxe... and I couldn't be happier  If you do get one I'd suggest True Bypass... they're tone sucking beasts.

I put mine right near the front. Before OD/Distortion, but after fuzz.

Dunlop makes a lot of different wahs, my opinion was based on their standard model. I do know that some of their models are true bypass but I don't know how good they are. I good true bypass wah at a reasonable price is the Buddah Bud Wah. Do a search in the forum... I think some people had good things to say about them.

Another option would be to by a stock Dunlop wah and send it down to John Spina (StratDeluxer) and have him mod it for you. Everyone has been happy with his work!

Unfortunately, no I'm not kidding...He has a few good moments but for the most part he wahs the same way for every song/solo, just making sure he presses/depresses with the drum beat.....He gets a very good wah *tone* however.

Kirk annoys me regardless if he's using a wah or not :D

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

I learned the same trick that so many others have mentioned from Tom Schultz in guitar player back in the 70s- Unless I have a need for a continuous controler on a delay or a chorus, I've assigned wah to my 2nd pedal for almost all of my single amp crunch sounds- My default is usually off, but it's rigged to kick in from a low to high sweep when I hit the pedal-

Although Schultz and others used this more to highlight frequenicies, I use this more like a shelf EQ to keep my part in the appropriate range in a given song- So I will usually open to full frequency when the rest of the band is in the background, especially for leads, but I can quickly get back into the pocket when the whole band comes in-

I never, ever, ever use it as a conventional wah-

I've always found my wah better AFTER overdrive... Strange...

I hate it after overdrive. Different strokes for different folks i guess.

Re: How Do You Use Your Wah Pedal?

I only use my Wah Wah when I want to sound like Jimi Hendrix. And then I drive it with a Fulltone '69...a pedal that is the best version of the "Fuzzface" that I have ever used. I have a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe and 2 or 3 Vox Wahs modified by John Spina to sound as good as my Fulltone Clyde. Lew
