Oops forgot that one...ha ha ha..Thats pretty much why I can nail the tone other than the Flex 3.....uh now I just got to solo like Zakk. :smack:

i always thought it was a MIJ boss SD-1, into a cranked JCM 800. the EMGs form a big part of it, as do his strings (GHS 11's i think)

he's not the type to turn down either ;)

less gain, and a nice amount of mids and bass

witha les paul, tuned to Eb, and then a ton of beer

I wouldn't doubt if his Marshall isn't modified - has any big player not used a modified Marshall? Even if it wasn't, The EMGs have mega output. His overdrive pedal is similar to a Boss Distortion, which actually does kick out a lot of gain IMO. After that it's just hard pickin and palm mutes. Don't trust anything on a record though - engineers can do so many things in the studio: double tracks, re-amp, add effects, use different amps than what they say they endorse, etc.

Damn man, you're making me miss the bloody thing. (another old recording with the stock pup)

I liked it's lead tone come to think of it.. brightish but not overly bright. The custom sounds a tiny bit lifeless in comparison.

Heh, never thought i'd see people GAS'in for ibanez pickups on the duncan forum! :laugh2:

zakk's JCM 800 has 6550 output tubes which i think have higher headroom than EL34s. his cabinet(marshall 1960bx 4x12) is also loaded with 200watt Electro-Voice 12Ls.

Yeah - I think a lot of his tone is preamp distortion rather than power stage. The 6550's have a lot of headroom and low end oomph... they don't compress the sound much. Similarly, the EVM12L speaker's won't break up much. If he's running two 4x12's on each head, then it's a 100 watt head driving 1600 watts worth of speakers - they're going to stay clean, too.

With this loud, clean output section, these amps are kinda halfway into SS Randall territory: make your distortion up front, then make it louder!
