How easy is it to change a S-S-S Strat to a H-S-S Strat?

Re: How easy is it to change a S-S-S Strat to a H-S-S Strat?

It really depends on how the strat is routed. Newer MIAs have a universal pickup routing. Sometimes called a swimming pool, it allows for any pickup combination. RIs and MIMs tend to be routed for three singles in my experience, although I think I did read a post about newer MIMs having universal routing.

Taking off your pickguard will end the speculation. If it is routed for a HB in the bridge position, then the task is fairly easy. If it's not, well that's a whole other issue.

I believe that it was the "American Standard" that had the swimming pool rout, the current generation "American" series may have gone back to S-S-S for vintage reasons. Like skh said, if you have a universal rout, all you need is a new pickguard and the HB. If not, you'll need to rout out the HB shape. Have you looked into the Rails and Jr. series? I have a Hot Rails equipped MIM and it has a great tone for rock. Not LP thick, but very nice.

My MIM is routed h-s-s.. I beleive. Most MIM's are and I heard the newer Americans were h-s-h.

Well, I'm putting a bucker in mine and I'm 99% sure its h-s-s (I lifted the pickguard and looked and stuck my whammy bar in a bit..prob not the best thing to do but whatever).

All you'l need is a 'bucker and a new pickguard.

It's a MIM. I have considered Hot Rails, and now that's looking like the most likely option.

I wanted a DiMarzio Super Distortion you see...

Every MIM i've seen opened-up (only like four but y'know) has had a S/S/H route.

Yeah most mims are routed to ssh. Mine was like that too. The installation should be under $100 at least this varies by region, but it may cost more if you ask for non typical wiring configuration for the pickup switch.
