I might only have a few singles, but generally, I don't break strings.

That's what I find too. It's been a long time since I broke a string. I don't know if my picking has become a little less aggressive, the guitars I play are somehow better, or if the Elixirs are just better quality strings. . . I used to break them all the time and need to keep spares.

You know what lawyers boxes are? I have 2, full to the top - organized by acoustic sets, electric sets, banjo sets and related, nylon string sets, and bass sets. Also - singles of all kinds, organized by type from smallest to largest, and even some slightly used strings organized and ID stickers on everything. Happens when you've been doing guitar repair for 40 years. No - they don't rust or wear out.

Have you had any issues with 20 year old strings (in climate control) oxidizing at all in the paper packages like Ernie Ball SLinkies?

I wonder if mine are any good after decades -oxidation is not visible at least

I have 5 packs of D'Addario 10-52, 3 packs of 11-49, one GHS 10-52, and the leftovers from piecing together an 8 sting set, which I think may be 10-54 or so. There's also a few random singles, maybe 5 or 6 total.

I like switching up gauges and trying new stuff way too often to stockpile anything aside from 10-52. That set isn't perfect, but I can tune it anywhere from standard down to drop B and make it work.

If you aren’t going to use the strings, why keep them? They serve no purpose.

If they are in paper they are probably not good anymore.

Well, I worked at or ran a recording studio for so many years that I got in the habit of storing everything for creative inspiration and ways to string up something different -thats where it started. I saved everything from micky mouse toy pianos to old Tupac track sheets he scratched rhymes on-anything to break a mental funk. I even worked at a studio that had a second grand piano with a reinforced lid we stored in the back to roll out if the bands came back from the bars or strip clubs, for the girls to dance on and party. If you run a commercial studio you tend to pack rat anything that could help an artist.

Now working at and on other facilities, it doesn't make as much sense -sure.

Maybe I donate them when D'addario does another recycle event.

-or maybe I've always been a hoarder and the studio part just fit my personality :lmao:

for electric, i buy em by the box usually dr pure blues 11-50 but if there is a stupid good deal on something else i sometimes grab it and i have a bunch of single strings in my bag. i dont change strings all that often so when i break a string, i either switch guitars or put a new string on quicklike if i was too lazy to bring two. for acoustic i use elixers and just keep one set as a backup since i dont play acoustic all that much. i have 20 something guitars and probably only 15 full sets of strings so i couldnt even restring them all once

I normally keep a 10-pak of my favorite NYXL's around, and then several loose packs of Everly Rocker's or B-52's, and a pack of Ernie Ball Slinky's. Then I also keep one spare DR bass pack.

Hey Jeremy. I've only tried DR's on a bass. (Also, Pure Blues.) How would you characterize the guitar strings?

i like the sound and feel of them, little warmer sounding than a typical daddario and feel better to me than ernie ball. pure nickle round core strings are kinda hard to find. i used to love snake oil strings but cant get those any more.

Ironically, being questioned like this is good timing. It's inspiration!

Today I am organizing my electronic and studio stuff -I've been out of town for almost 2 years -so sh*ts gotten out of hand.

i like the sound and feel of them, little warmer sounding than a typical daddario and feel better to me than ernie ball. pure nickle round core strings are kinda hard to find. i used to love snake oil strings but cant get those any more.

love em on my single coil guitars. bucker guitars seem less picky but its easier to use the same strings on everything and as i said, i like the feel of em

Totally agree in general too. Single Coils expose the nuances of different string brands more.

No. I throw a couple strips of camphor paper in the boxes every other year or so. It emits a vapor that protects metal. (Old tool & die makers trick for the toolbox)

Thanks for the offer but I'll probably just order some from Amazon. Last month I changed strings on a couple of guitars and used up my last two packs.
Usually I use EB hybrid sets, 10-52.

I usually have a box of regular D'addario 9-42's & few sets of their 10-46's. Also a spare set of Roto's for my bass & a couple of extra sets of 7 string EB Super Slinky's (9-52) for my Ibby S7420. I'm careful about wiping strings down after playing (even if it's for a few minutes) so I don't change for 2-3 months usually.
