How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

This is alitle funny cause I have a 15 year old guitar with a plastic nut in and the slots are still nice and high. And I have been playing that guitar allot to.

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

I've had to replace nuts. Just did one on my Martin D-18 E Retro, but it had been buggered up by the previous owner. Most bone nuts will last a long time. The old plastic nuts would wear fast, and the brass nuts popular in the '70s didn't hold up. I've heard of graphite nuts wearing, even those locking nuts on Floyd Rose guitars, but this is kind of a mystery.

Some times they can fix it with some powdered bone or baking soda and super glue to build up a slot.

Try using some of the Big Bend's Nut Sauce to lube the grooves when you change strings. This will DRAMATICALLY reduce friction and reduce wear of the nut slots. It's good on saddles, too. I've used it for years and it gets my strongest recommendation. A must for vibrato-equiped guitars.

Good luck.

Bill

+1 on the nut sauce.

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

Ive had locking nuts on every guitar Ive owned pretty much, aside from this Squier Standard Strat I bought in 2013, so I havent had any nuts wear out on me obviously.. Im going to swap that plastic jobber for a brass nut here soon though.

I think most times nut get replaced because of sloppy mods or just swapped out for something better as opposed to wear. But im sure it does and can happen.

I've replaced one plastic nut because the D string slot wore out. I had it filled in and recut but it happened again. Replaced it with a bone nut. So far so good.
In the past I replaced a nut on a different guitar with a graphite one and never had a problem with it.

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

I've replaced a few, but those took about 30 years to wear, and they were plastic. I don't think I will ever have to replace any more on my current guitars.

Replaced several broken/chipped ones that were on used guitars. Never had one wear out.

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

I've been playing for 55 years and have NEVER had to replace even a cheap plastic nut from wear. I've replaced almost all of the nuts on my guitars (I currently have 4 dozen) with bone compensated nuts because they quite simply work better, but not because of wear.

However, if your nuts are made of tissue paper, then I can see that you might occasionally need to replace them from excess wear...especially if your hands sweat a lot and get them wet.

Re: How fast do you wear out your guitar nut?

I suspect my guy has been using piss cheap bone nuts when he replaced them?

My acoustic guitar nut also had to be changed after about 2 years after he installed a bone nut on that aswell.
