How is everyone liking their Vox Night Trains??

I got the 15 watter, and got ripped on the rebate, but is seems like a nice little amp, doesn't seem to get the AC 15 "Jangle" so much, but has a great distortion , a little on the bright side. What is your opinion?

I have the Lil' Night Train. It's very clearly limited in what its range of capabilities is, but it can still do a job as a practice amp at relatively low volume. The Bright mode is quite flexible and quieter, whilst the Fat mode provides a noticeable jump in both volume and is (as advertised) fatter. With the volume well up and the gain kept around 9 o'clock, you can get a very useable clean tone, but you can never quite get away from a very slight grainy aspect to the sound - you wouldn't call it breakup as such, and may just be a characteristic of the single 12AU7. It's always seemed to play nice with the pedals I've run into it, though without an effects loop and the ease with which you can push it into breakup once the gain knob is wound up more, modulation pedals can quickly lose their definition. Overall though, if you want a family/neighbour friendly option, it's a great way to go.

I got all excited-like about the new NT15H-G2, in part because of the effects loop...but then my excitement faded a bit when I read that the reverb is digital. I'd rather have no reverb/effects in a tube amp than digital crap.

^^ That version actually appeals to me immensely for the reasons I outlined in my comments on the smaller version. The only immediate gap I see is perhaps a half power switch, but the rest ticks any number of boxes. Maybe I can pick one of those up in Hong Kong next year.

I had the night train for like 2-3 years and loved it to death. only reason I switched was for a hand-wired fenderish 15 watt combo with my buddy who had a dark, emg loaded ltd explorer that wanted more brightness and gain out of the amp while I was using a strat and an OCD pedal and looking for a darker Bassman/Marshall like distortion sound in a little amp. Worked out great for both of us. Works ESPECIALLY well with darker and heavier sounding instruments. Only thing I wish it had was functioning EQ for the thick switch but I understand why they didn't do that. That thick setting is amazing.

Not being my nr. #1, I still love it.
A bit on the trebly said, agree but, there is nothing wrong in to totally roll off that treble knob, if requiered.
It takes any pedal really good and, has no competence in portability.

used to have one and found it pretty bright and needed a lil stronger bass, also a little fizzy at high preamp gain settings. That thick mode had a great honk through the matching cab. Wouldn't mind owning one again someday but I'm not in a spot to expand my gear right now.

I later owned a Tweaker 15. The night train had more complexity than the "ac" mode on the tweaker. sometimes you don't need a lot of knobs to get a rich tone.
