Re: How much do you pay to get a new nut made?
 Nut jokes never get old
I could not bring myself to pay someone to replace a nut, and I'm certainly no pro at it. I replaced the nut of my '93 Les Paul Standard with a ready-made Graphtec nut, which needed to be sanded down slightly to get the correct height. Worked just fine for the 10 years I had that guitar, and as far as I know, the current owner still hasn't changed it.
I've modded the nut and saddle of my acoustic by sanding it down by hand as described above (though I did need a surface with a slight arch to it since the base of the nut was arched slightly - the arm of my computer chair was oddly just the right curvature). I now have an acoustic that plays like an electric yet still sounds great.
No fancy files, no feeler gages, no micrometers, no problems. It's hideously simple to do on your own, but you may want to buy two nuts - the first one I ever tried I wound up snapping in half (a Strat-style, which was way thinner than the LP-style nut).
What part of TN are you in? In you're near West TN (Jackson area) I think I have a couple of LP-style Graphtecs in my parts box (that I'll likely never use) I could mount and set up for you - no charge.
