How much do you pay to get a new nut made?

Re: How much do you pay to get a new nut made?

Last time I needed one, I called the local guy, he said $100! So I ordered one and made it myself. Saved myself 75 bucks and learned how to do it. Win-win.

So you spent $25 on a blank nut?!!

Was it gold or platinum?

 Nut jokes never get old

I could not bring myself to pay someone to replace a nut, and I'm certainly no pro at it. I replaced the nut of my '93 Les Paul Standard with a ready-made Graphtec nut, which needed to be sanded down slightly to get the correct height. Worked just fine for the 10 years I had that guitar, and as far as I know, the current owner still hasn't changed it.

I've modded the nut and saddle of my acoustic by sanding it down by hand as described above (though I did need a surface with a slight arch to it since the base of the nut was arched slightly - the arm of my computer chair was oddly just the right curvature). I now have an acoustic that plays like an electric yet still sounds great.

No fancy files, no feeler gages, no micrometers, no problems. It's hideously simple to do on your own, but you may want to buy two nuts - the first one I ever tried I wound up snapping in half (a Strat-style, which was way thinner than the LP-style nut).

What part of TN are you in? In you're near West TN (Jackson area) I think I have a couple of LP-style Graphtecs in my parts box (that I'll likely never use) I could mount and set up for you - no charge.

Re: How much do you pay to get a new nut made?

The nut on my new bargain acoustic sits a bit high
Strings come off
Draw a line at the bottom of nut where it meets the fretboard
Pop nut off with screwdriver

Using the line as reference

File the bottom of nut

Just a little
Put it back on with just the e strings to check height

Repeat until satisfied

When finished a spot of wood glue

Wish I'da thought of the pencil line, but I got lucky with eyeballing my acoustic parts. :D
