How much does your main guitar weigh?

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

Weighed myself on the digital bathroom scale with and without the guitar.

As someone who doesn't care about guitar weight one way or the other, it's close enough for me.

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

I bought a Berkeley fish scale. Accurate to within .1 of a pound, maximum 50 lbs. I use a liitle piece of leather around the tuners, hook the scale on, and lift it. Takes less than five seconds to register. I think I paid $15.00 for the scale.

That is acceptable / perfect. I just don't know how anyone without one of those is doing it. Or am I the only guy without a scientific scale at home?

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. I guess a digital scale is used for accurately measuring other... things too. All perfectly legal things of course.

Man, you guys complain about guitar weight - try playing bass. I switched to bass for about 3 or 4 years and I still have my MIM Jazz. It's a boat anchor compared to my guitars. Absolute tone monster though so that's why I tolerate it. With great bass comes great responsibility.

I don't have weight numbers but my lightest is probably my Gibson LP Jr DC and my heaviest is definitely my Sunburst Telecaster (poplar body). Both my Ash Teles are right in between those - not super light, but not heavy either.

My scale isn't scientific but it IS calibrated and we use it for our health assessment weigh-ins. Weigh myself and then myself with the geet. I can't do just the guitar alone as it's got to be within 20-90% of the range of the scale to be accurate and 9 lbs on a scale that goes up to 400lbs won't cut it.

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

+1. My 'main guitar' is whatever I'm in the mood for, but most of my LP's and 335's weigh around 8 or 9+ lbs. Once I put a guitar on, I never notice the weight, unless it's a lighweight (full) hollowbody. Most of my playing is standing, but then at 6'5" and 260lbs, a 10 lb guitar isn't a big deal. If I was a foot shorter, a 10 lb guitar would probably seem like a boat anchor.

Bull****.

Your main guitar is what you would grab if your house was on fire.

Bull****.

Your main guitar is what you would grab if your house was on fire.

Then I have five:

1927 Martin 00-28K2
1968 Guild F50
'70's Thomas Norwood D-35 copy
1968 ES-330
1968 SG Standard

The Martin and the Norwood are the literally irreplaceable ones, though. All sentimental value aside for the '68 SG, it probably would not be all that hard to find another like it.

But none of those are my "main guitar."

I'd let the '59 Strat burn along with everything else if I could get all of those out. Different story if it was not a refin missing the original neck.

what if you could onjly grab one

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

If I could grab one, I could grab all five, and probably more. SG and 330 in one hand, Norwood under the arm. Guild in one hand, Martin under the arm. I'd probably try to squeeze in an extra in the hand with the Guild, and try to put one or two of the ones in gig bags on my back as well.

The point is that the main guitar isn't necessarily the one that everyone would grab in a fire. I would grab my most irreplaceable ones, not the ones I use the most. Why would I grab an easily replaceable '99 CS Esquire and leave the '27 Martin to burn just because I use the Esquire [a lot] more?

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

My Frankenstrat, which is my number 1, is 6.5 lbs.

My SG Jr. is around the same. Haven't weighed it officially yet but it feels like it's there.

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

You know that quote in your sig? I'm 95% that's the "language" I got an infraction for. Do I give a ****? **** no! I'm not 7.

10 lbs? jesus man

Yeah, that quote is pretty kewl.......:cool2:

My ST300 can be a pain sometimes but it is my only standard tuned Carvin so it gets much play time compared to my others tuned to Eb.

I guess 9.5 lbs does sound heavy for a non Les Paul guitar huh?

:scratchch

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

I honestly havnt narrowed down a #1 yet, but getting close. My top 3 are:
LP Trad pro - 8+ lbs
Charvel So cal 7+
Burny LP 12+ Seriously.. But it sustains for days...

I need to try to get an accurate weight for them all.

Re: How much does your main guitar weigh?

My Strat which is far and away the guitar I go to the most comes in just barely over 6 lbs.
