How much is your limit?

Re: How much is your limit?

Not a Gibson, but R9 level price. Don't want to possibly offend the builder so Id rather not name names. It'll take me 300 hours at work to pay for it and i have a decent paying job that not many people can do with a high barrier to entry. Makes my skin crawl knowing it'll probably take 10% of that time to make.

Re: How much is your limit?

I rarely buy new, and when I've bought boutique or CS they've always been used. I'd have serious reservations about shelling out ten grand for an axe I could only sell for five. As for something in the $4K range new, I'd probably be far more likely to buy - being pretty sure I'd bond with it and knowing I could probably get $3K for it on the off chance that I didn't.

Needless to say, I wouln't pay thousands for a guitar unless I were pretty certain I'd like it.

Re: How much is your limit?

I don't buy new guitars typically, so no # for that. The most I've spent on a guitar is $2800. I would and will spend more at some point, but not for a bit. The last two guitars I sold, my Dean Hardtail's, I lost between $400-$600 on each one. That was a full 1/3 of it's used value, which is a shame. I broke even selling my last Les Paul, which was fine.

My goal is if course not to lose any money, but a $100-$200 loss is not horrible. I usually buy only what I think I want to keep forever, or what I can get out of again. I was just selling at a time when unfortunately when I needed the money. Had things been different, I would have declined the offers and just waited, so the loss was my choice.

Hey man, if you have the money and are responsible, go treat yourself to something special. I bet you work hard and dedicated your life to guitar, go for it!! Some people like cars, bikes or watches. I have one expensive guitar, I just always wanted a real Gibson. It isnt that much better than my cheapos but I dont fkn care. I wanted it, I bought it. No remorse here, its a great guitar and beautiful.

All my life I always had so/so guitars. About 6 years ago my wife talked me into buying my first really nice guitar, my LP. There’s no substitute for a truly professional level instrument.
Now she just needs to get me to stop!!

Well, I doubt she will. My kids never went without what they needed, and my wife has a closet full of purses and shoes anyway. I may wind up with a new Prestige someday...

Re: How much is your limit?

My max has been 4k... I'm building a guitar now with over 1500 bucks in materials alone. Premium timbers, premium pricing.

Re: How much is your limit?

I buy what speaks to me as an instrument without looking primarily at resale value. That does have limits but the old addage you get what you pay for rings true most of the time. Limit will be what I can justify for what I consider a tool to do a job nothing more. Wont pay so much just for pretty wood I don't want to take something out out of fear of scratching it on one hand but if it performs well as an instrument and does the job well enough---.

Re: How much is your limit?

I’ve never calculated depreciation on any guitar. I’ve rarely sold old gear. Sometimes, but often traded in after I’ve used it to pieces. I got value out of it, so monetary depreciation is offset by the fact that I got everything I wanted out of it.

Re: How much is your limit?

What is the most amount of money you would be willing to loose in depreciation on a new guitar?
Even if it's a guitar you have wanted for a while.

Seems all the Gibson CS stuff is taking a horrendous hit. Boutique stuff is worse. Where do you draw the line, even on nice stuff with killer tops? When it costs $4k just to buy one and see if it gels, it is that even sane to buy it in the first place. Seems like for the the most part second hand guitars had better be something amazingly special and in demand for them to sell for much over $2K used.

Ehh that’s tricky for me because most of the guitars I’ve bought used so I guess maximum depreciation id wanna lose is about 800 dollars as that’s another good guitar

Re: How much is your limit?

My favorite stuff usually lands in the 1-2grand range, and is also probably some of the best resale ratio. (MIJ Ibanez and ESP-standard/E-II)
I'll throw more standard Carvins in there too, especially if it was a function over form order, but with all the new Kiesel options they can easily reach Gibby custom prices if you have fancy taste in cosmetics (terrible resale value)

I never sell guitars so I don't really factor in resale when buying. The few guitars I've sold have been to friends so I purposely gave them a steal-of-a-deal.

Re: How much is your limit?

In terms of price, musical instruments here are in generally upward trend. For example, an RG1570 or an MIM Strat purchased in 2007 would command the same (if not higher) price they were originally sold for cause the price of the new ones by now have gone up by 25%.

In 2012 I actually made a 10 percent profit selling my Behringer pre amp, which I bought in 2005.

Re: How much is your limit?

If you miss the window to recoup enough with depreciation, then just hold onto it until it’s “classic” and sell then. You’ll make it all back. It all evens out in the end.

Re: How much is your limit?

My most expensive guitar must be my Gibson LP Classic 2017T Goldtop. Pluss new humbuckers.

I'm not comfortable using more money that I spent on it.

If I would, those would be the exceptions:
- Music Man JP
- Gibson ES335
- Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty
- Martin D28

Still, even when I had money to spend on one of those, I just couldn't justify it yet..

Re: How much is your limit?

I never think about resale because I assemble what I want knowing full well I will never recoup the investment. PRS has a guitar I'd love to own, but it's $4,800 and that makes absolutely no sense to me. It can't possibly be 3 times better than a partscaster I build for 1/3 that price. That said, if $4,800 was pocket change to me I'd snag one in a heartbeat!

Re: How much is your limit?

I usually dont buy with resale in mind. I did take a bath on one Gibson though. It was a turd and I lost alot rolling it.

I don’t look at guitar money that way. I don’t expect linear relationships. I think in terms of the size of the smile on my face when I swipe my card.

Eh? These are two well-known huge depreciation hits.

Used MIM strats are firmly stuck in the $225 - 300 bracket, 400 tops maybe with big ticket upgrades.... and they were typically $350 - 400 new in the late nineties, $500-600 in the 21st century.

RG 1570 Prestige resales are kinda sad because they're seen as less-desirable reissues of the old 80s 570's, and simultaneously junior to the 2xxx and 3xxx Prestiges and Jcrafts.... guitar center used has em starting from $450ish whenever.....New prices were $800 - 1500 depending when you snagged it.

PS oh well at least they were vastly superior to the costcutter Genesis series
