How much should I pay for a used Gibson LP Studio or Classic?

Hi Guys!

Gee, it seems like I haven't post in a decade... kids have that effect on you...

But now I'm back and I got a little more cash to put on gear. I'm shopping around for a Gibson Les Paul. Can't really afford a STD, but Studio and Classics seems nice. SG also. From what I see, I can get a LP Classic for about 1400 in Canada, a studio for about 900 and an SG for about 800.

What do you think? Are these price reasonable? How are these priced in the US (I'm talking USED)? I wouldn't mind making a trip to the border to get a better one cheaper :)

Are the Studio's worth it? Some people tell me they prefer Epi LPs to Gibson Studio's, is this really true?

Is it worth it to cash out a little more for a Standard at these level? (I'm talking about used, the new Standards are like 3K in Canada, no way I'll cash out this!)

Thanks in advance!

If you're looking at Studios keep an eye out for used BFGs and Ultras. I'm seriously thinking about getting a BFG exclusively for open tuning.
Other than that, I can tell you that after going cheap for many years, I finally bought my first actual new LP Standard and don't regret a dime of it.

As far as used prices, I'd just eBay it. Look under Advanced Search and tick the Completed Listings box. The listings in green actually sold.
After that, I'd check Chris' Guitars, MLP and your area CraigsList.
Oh, and don't forget to put a WTB post here.
You just never know.

Good luck.

$1400.00 for a used Classic seems high. I'm pretty sure I got mine for less, new, and it wasn't that long ago that inflation would account for the difference. I would expect a Classic to go for around $1000 and a Classic Plus for a little bit more; then adjust for condition, etc...

Which SG? SG standards come pretty cheap these days, that's a good buy if you are into SGs.

LP studios are really not any worse than classics or standards for that matter, playing and sound-wise. But it can be a pain to re-sell them. The classic is usually an easier sell since it looks almost like a standard but costs less. All these are swiss-cheesed at least, have Nashville bridges etc.

Hi Guys!

The Studios are definitely worth it. I don't know much about the Faded Cherry or the Worn Brown but the other Studios with the maple cap (typically black, white or wine red) are very much worth it.

I am not an Epiphone guy. I tried about a dozen of them when I shopped for my first Les Paul and I had the idea when I saw them that I'd buy two Epiphones instead of a Gibson but after a dozen of each and every Gibson blew the doors off of every Epi I made my choice with 100% confidence.

I see a couple Les Paul Studios on kijiji Montreal for $800 to $950. They could probably be had for a hundred or two less. Offer low and meet in the middle...if the seller won't move at all then find one who will. Also read up on the fakes and how to tell them apart from the real thing.

Overall, I have had about 50 guitars in my possession at one time or another and the Gibson Les Paul Studios have been my consistent favourites:
