How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

I only adjust mine when I develop a buzz due to the neck being off. I don't consider truss rod adjustment part of a regular plan. I have heard a few people say that their truss rod gets loose and rattles...I guess I would just snug it up at that time. I have never had a plan like once a year or anything. Like the old saying goes..."If it isn't broken, don't fix it." That is just me.....

Have to agree with Dave
Once your guitar is set up, you really shouldn't need to adjust the rod. Unless, you change the gauge of strings, or, your guitar takes a neck hit, such as falling over, etc. and it starts buzzing.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Can't say I have to mess with it often.

But I prefer guitars with thick, stable necks, that probably has to do with it.

"Heat and humidity central"...hmm. Yes, Texas can do a number on wood. Might have to reconsider your guitar storage situation, Jerry.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

In my part of the country (midwest) humidity levels have a big affect on necks. The wood in the neck will swell a little bit in the summer when the humidity levels are high. In the winter they dry out. It's amazing how much a little moisture or lack of can change a neck. Typically truss rod ajustments are a twice a year event for me.

i have a large collection... i have to say most of them i never have to adjust.. a few i need to adjust in fall and spring time

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Maybe twice a year summer/winter if you have wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Once or twice a year. Almost always at the beginning of summer, and sometimes at the beginning of winter. It usually doesn't take much to get rid of whatever buzz developed, probably between a quarter and a half turn.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Twice a year for me to... I'm in Indiana and it gets real humid here also.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

Most of these answers are BS...

It all depends on your situation AND the guitar...I've got guiars that get adjusted several times a year and I have 2 that I've never touched, one of them I've had for well over 10 years now and I've never even so much as pulled the truss rod cover off...

The correct answer is that a truss rod needs adjustment when it needs it...

+ 1

I haven't touched mine in two-and-a-half years and it doesn't need to be touched today.

When I see that the relief changes or it gets a backbow causing buzz, then I'll give it a whirl... otherwise not.

I have a 1990's era G&L legacy special that I never had to adjust, until I moved to Hong Kong.

Now it has been adjusted twice, because of the moisture and heat.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

at least once a year, if you live in a area with normal humidity levels.

Just cause a guitar has a thick neck doesn't mean a thing in terms of stability.

Have you ever been inside a house when its -40 outside for a large chunk of the year? It gets really dry. Like I said, I do minor tweaks to compensate for that, not anything huge, but it definitely needs to be done unless I want really high action to avoid buzzing the other part of the year.

Re: How often does a TRUSSROD require adjustment?

the one i seemt o have to adjust a lot is a imported Jackson... i have no idea why but that paper thin neck is always moving..... My 1995 Warmoth neck i've never touched!!! makes me wonder if i should loosen it and oil it someday soon... 13 years and never has been adjusted!!!! Warmoth could use that as a sales pitch

In that same account my SL-1 has only been adjusted once in the 4 years I've had it. It's different with every guitar.
