How to degauss single coil pole pieces (A5's).

I got some new Fralin BS pickups and they are a litte to harsh on the attack only. Talked to Lindy and he said he chrages his mags pretty strong and that I can knock them down some by demagnetizing them. They're already as low as I want to go with them. Just need to a little softer attack fro the magnet.

Anyone done this successfully, any tips or advice???

Thanks

I kind of agree with you ... I tested a Fralin high output tele bridge, and expected a little warmer tone from a 9K pickup.

forum member Zhang has a method which involves using a device sold by StewMac. Someone else will have to give you the details though.

I'm talking attack only not EQ, they're not too bright. Actually I find them too dark, middy, muddy almost on the neck. It's the strong, hard attack that's killin me. I'm exchangin them for the VH's for sure and would like to deguass the mags a little. I like the SP43 even though it has a ceramic mag. Wonder what it would sound like with A5 bars.

I haven't been really impressed with any of the Lollar stuff I've heard or played, go figure.

Not too familiar with SD's single coil line-up.

Dimarzio Areas and hotter bridge pickups sound killer as does Suhr's FL's; played them today and was very impressed.

Edit: And I'll add that Fender's CS54 set isn't too shabby either. Don't care for anything else.

A5 bars that narrow would demagnetize themselves, especially being face to face with another such magnet with same poles facing each other. You're stuck with ceramics.

Pete Biltoft of Vintage Vibe offers his SP90's with ceramic or A5's.....??

As for degaussing rod magnets, I would use something less strong, like an A8 bar, because rods are much smaller than bars obviously and trying to degauss them with a neo disk is likely to work a little TOO well -- might just flip the polarity.

Beyond that, I've found that the tone really isn't improved by partial degaussing of rod mags. They need that presence and sparkle. At least to my ear anyway...
