Just made a 5-4-2 single coil pickup

Re: Just made a 5-4-2 single coil pickup

I've done 5/2 (Neck) and 3/2 (Middle), both 6.1K, for laughs with an old set of stock Peavey single coils. To my ears, the middle pup is the better of the two, and has made that position worthwhile, so I'm not fussed if it's a mush scenario.

I'm sure I read in one of the blogs on the SD site, about trying out alternating pole piece polarities, but can't remember what was written about that off the top of my head.

5/2 (or 5/3 as I sometimes do it) is right up there with the Spin-A-Split as one of the all-time underrated mods. I don't recommend it for neck and middle except on very low uber-vintage winds but it's great on bridge whether hardcore vintage or an 11.2k (42 AWG) monster like I made for my Strat bridge.

If you use all the same Alnico grade (and assuming all fully or nearly fully charged), there is often a problem EQing for all 6 strings. With A2's or A3's tonal characteristics, putting them on the plain strings and leaving A5 on the wound strings, EQ problems are solved. Until you actually hear it for yourself you won't understand the following but when you do, you'll know what I mean: With 5/2 or 5/3 on the bridge, for the first time in your Strat's life, it will sound like all 6 strings are from the same guitar.

For myself, I had the pickup laying around, and the magnets didn't cost much, so I figured I'd try it. I may change the configuration around a bit, but I will try it out in the guitar just to hear what it sounds like.

As proud owner of the very first Refin set made with 3 different polepiece spreads, compensated stagger for a plain 3rd string, and a 5/2 bridge by Dave Plummer, aka Zhangliqun, I can personally vouch for the accuracy of this statement.

David, the set you wound for me is still to this day the standard to all other p'ups of different makers should compare to. :notworthy:

I've only tried A5 on the neck (which I know think is 5/3, not 5/2 as per my previous post), and not sure it worked for me, but then all I've done is nothing more than switch out rods on what I assume to be a very budget Peavey pup. Bridge wise I just put in A2s, as I've never been all too keen on anything A5 I've had at the bridge, but I've no idea how that's worked out, as one of the mounting holes is knackered, and the pup is slumped in the hole :-S

Same here, seemed like a cheap way to have a play :)
