How to determine Grade of AlNiCo magnet

is there any way possible to determine what grade of AlNiCo magnet I have in a pickup set?

I assume I would need to remove the magnet for this?

With a Gaussmeter you can get a pretty good idea, but only if you know for sure the mags are fully charged.

In all other cases, a rough idea can be had, but never 100% certainty.

And yes, the mag have to be removed.

some manufacturers apply a color code to the edge/end of the magnet.

Duncan, for example, will use blue for A2 and black for A5.

other dudes like LtKojak might probably know more about some of the other company's identifying marks.

I've always wondered this. Always imagined a Nigel Tufnal moment "can you hear the Degaussed Alnico V with the extra rusty rough surface?" "So much better than the stock magnets".

Perhaps an idea for an upcoming "guess the magnet" poll.

You can tell 5 from 2 with full charge. 2 from 3 or 4, well....
