How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

Contact Steven Kersting. He can do any HB pickup you want him (ceramics, or other etc) to fit into a p90 cavity.

I have to say that I understand that you like the P-90 look, I do like it too. But I just can stand the P90-humbucker mix from Dimarzio. They are awfull!!! :smack:

Have you tried the P-90 Super Distortion or are you referring to earlier models like the stack 90 or the DLX? I haven't installed mine and I will try to this weekend, but I have heard a local band using one a while ago and I thought it sounded pretty close to the full size super distortion and I have a few of them so I know what they sound like.

Mantic, that guitar is screaming for a p90 super distortion. Very similar to my Peavey Firenza. I'm going to wire the P90 super distortion this weekend. If it sucks I will be disappointed and surprised.

p90s are pretty fat already and its dc resistance is similar or the same as a paf. humbuckers are fatter of course and sounds different but p90s are fat too. just listen to early mike bloomfield with his lp goldtop with p90s.

Dimarzio makes a P-90 sized Tone Zone and Super Distortion.

with the mini humbuckers it will be more like an LP deluxe and those were great guitars. If you want to hear what one can do listen to a little bit of buckcherry. The lead guitarist played through a marshall and an lp deluxe with the stock (as far as i know) mini humbuckers. A custom mini from seymour should get a more modern and crunchier tone

What's the basis of your opinion? If your going to post a "review" of a product you should always explain your reasons otherwise it's not helpful at all.

I think i'm going to order the guitar. I'm pretty sure i can accomplish what I want. Wish I had time to wait for Fusion to post his review on the p-90 Super Distortion but these guitar are no longer made and they are getting harder and harder to find.

Re: How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

Just got off the phone. The guitar will be here mid week.

Fusion are you going to put the pickup in this weekend as in today and tomorrow or next weekend?

Re: How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

I will put the pickup in tonight or tomorrow afternoon at the latest.

Sounds good, can't wait to hear your review. Hope it's a good one..

I have a PRS SE Soapbar. Great Guitar, but the pickups are not that great.
I personally LOVE a P-90 tone. I will be slapping a Rio Grande Bluesbar in the guitar very soon.
However, the Dimarzio DLX and DLX-90 are pretty good pickups.
In fact, I consider the DLX series of Dimarzio the best things they make.

MPcoluv, which of those Dimarzios would you suggest for the neck? I want something that will be perfect for jazz.

EZ74 wow thats cool I didn't know EMG made those. Too bad you couldn;t mix a P81 with a traditional P-90 in the neck. I want the best of both worlds.

I would go with the DLX-90 for the neck. The old DLX and the DLX plus are pretty hot for a neck pickup.....
Or you could just keep the stock pup in the neck.
Bill Lawrence made some P-90 sized humbuckers years ago that show up on Ebay. They are called L-550s I think.
Also RioGrande makes a "Baby Bucker" that might go into a P-90 hole.

What to the EMGs sound like. Seems like everytime I see thier name mentioned it's negative.

Re: How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

Mantic I got the Dimarzio SD P-90 installed. It took alot longer than expected. The Dimarzio pickup is a little larger than the cutout for the bridge slot so I had to sand it down little by litte to fit the pickup in.

Well I have to say I like it alot more than the stock Peavey P-90, but I don't quite remember the full size Super Distortion being so middy, maybe its just the guitar as its a mahogany body.

I got so used to playing my Duncan Distortion and my Dimarzio Super III, this seems like it will take some getting used to, but it can get metal tones which is what I expected.

As far as it sounding as full as a regular Super Distortion, I can't say, I'm going by memory since it was a while ago that I had a guitar with a SD in it. I have a couple SD's lying around but they aren't installed in anything at the moment.

Well here is a small sound byte:

Peavey Firenza w/ Dimarzio P-90 Super Distortion

Mantic :thanks: for motivating me to get this in my guitar, I have been putting this off for a couple of months already.

Does Seymour Duncan make a P-90 with 12 pole pieces? I'm afraid if I go with Dimarzio for the neck position, the nice P-90 sound will turn to full humbucker and I want to keep a nice warm P-90 sound, hopefully better than the stock Peavey in there already.

Re: How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

Looks good, glad I could "modivate" you :) I tried your sound byte and it doesn't work :(

Re: How to get a humbucker sound out of a p90 guitar?

I just replaced the stock PRS P-90 in my SE soapbar with a Rio Grande Bluesbar.
The Rio pup is better in all respects. The guitar really sounds like a old Lp-Jr in the bridge now. I am now considering getting a Rio Jazzbar for the neck pup....
If you want the old LP-Jr tone out of the SE Soapbar, then I highly recomend the Rio Bluesbar. I am sure SD makes a similiar pup such as the hot P-90.

Mantic I think the Hi fi clip works now. Something like 24 hours they only play the lo fi version??? Anyways it should work now.
