there was this stoned out guy in town here about 8 years ago that used to play Beatles tunes in local bars... all he had was a stock mid 90's MIM Standard Strat and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, a few pedals... it was kind of silly how well he could play and get the various sounds of The Beatles on that common rig...

It's all in the fingers, imo.

Going back and listening to the Beatles I never realized how much George Harrison played slide.

Does anyone know what he had his guitar tuned too?

Re: How to get Beatles "Something" guitar tone

I always wondered if that Les Paul was once mine.

I had a '56 Goldtop with P90's in high school, and I stripped it and painted it polka dot! Then I took it to Gibson in Kalamazoo around '67 or '68 and had it fitted with humbuckers and painted a burgundy color, then sold it to a buddy who sold it to Savoy Brown. So I know it went back to England.

Not that one Lew.

That guitar has one of the most amazing pedigrees of any guitar out there. For sure, it used to belong to John Sebastian in the early 60s, then it was bought by Rick Derringer. He had it refinned (by Gibson) and had the Bigsby removed and the stoptail added. Clapton bought it from there and he gave it to Harrison.

I seem to recall that guitar has a story before John Sebastian- something like Mickey Baker or Ike Turner... but I'm not sure of it.

The other interesting story about the guitar is that it was stolen from Harrison's Hollywood home- and sold to Guitar Center (or whatever the store "Norm" worked at back in the day). Some dude bought it, Harrison tracked it down- but the dude took off to Mexico, because he knew he could get a lot of money- it being Harrison's guitar. Eventually a trade was brokered with a 'Burst and a P bass in trade for that guitar.

…and then George installed a device that would cause smoke to come pouring out of the pickups whenever he hit a G on the 15th fret of the high E string.

Re: How to get Beatles "Something" guitar tone

It's was a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop (factory refinished in red, called "Lucy") plugged into a 1964 Fender 6G6-B Bassman, guitar tone rolled off. The rhythm guitar was a 1968 Fender Rosewood Telecaster plugged into a Leslie 122 driven by an early 1968 Twin Reverb.
Both guitar parts played by Harrison. Lennon played piano but it was mixed out because it was too intrusing. The piano was mixed in just for the descending a-ab-g-gb-f-e and c-b-a-g-e-d-c lines before the solo.

Thanks for chiming in. That makes sense from what I hear from the song.

Very tasty playing indeed.

Re: How to get Beatles "Something" guitar tone

I found where I'd read about a studio owing the guitar.

From a The Gear Page post:

...was the name Harrison gave that guitar. He was most likely the fourth owner, not counting Clapton. The story, very much open to revision, goes something like this:

'57 Goldtop #7-8789, originally purchased by Atlantic Records in NYC sometime around '57-58 as a studio instrument. Signout sheet allegedly places it in the hands of several house players including Mickey Baker, on session dates for Ray Charles, the Drifters and King Curtis among others.

Foward to '66 (maybe '67?), ATCO recording artist John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful purchases the guitar from the label for use on tour. The McCoys, with Rick Derringer on guitar, are the opening act. The McCoys have some sort of amp fiasco, and Sebastian trades the Les Paul and an amp to Derringer for his Gibson ES-3(x)5 model.

At the completion of the tour, Derringer sends the guitar back to Gibson for its trans-red refin; meanwhile, the McCoys break up and the Derringer brothers begin playing with a then-unknown Johnny Winter down in FL, where Rick is mainly playing a Strat. Gibson sends the refin'd Les Paul back to RD's parents' home; the transparent finish reveals that the top is made from asymmetrical pieces. Derringer puts it up for sale at Dan Armstrong's shop in NYC.

Clapton comes through town with the Cream on their last US tour, buys the LP from Armstrong and brings it back to London as a (25th?) birthday gift for Harrison. Clapton then plays it on the "Gently Weeps" sessions, and Harrison will continue using it well into his solo career.

It was stolen from his home in L.A. around '73, found its way to the Guitar Center and was sold. Discovering its progeny, the store negotiated its return: at a meeting with Harrison, "Lucy" was exchanged for a '58 sunburst and a pre-CBS Fender bass. It still belongs to the Harrison estate.

Hey Henry the Horse,

Two posts every twenty months? C'mon, man! We need more Beatles in here.

Re: How to get Beatles "Something" guitar tone

I'd always read that the "Day Tripper" riff was recorded using a Strat, and I played that way for many years.

But the first time I ever played it on a 335 was the first time I'd ever played it and had it sound right.

Strange.
