How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

Ok, I haven't done much research on this at all, but how do I get Rock you like a hurricane tone? I'm guessing it's a maple guitar with a maple/ebony neck/fretboard and something like a JB in the bridge position? That's only an uneducated guess so please tell me what you think.

JCM 800 and a JB or a custom. USe a od with the maste rup on the amp. Low wattage speakers.

A Gibson explorer. Anything will get you close with the marshall

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

I read somewhere once that the Custom nails Schenker's tone.

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

The closest I got to his tone, was to boost alot of the Mid range, alot of treble and presence, and rolling a bit of the bass, and plugging my Charvel with a Super Distortion in to it, that gave me a real Jabs like sound.

I soooooo nailed that album with a Scholz Rockman one time...can't remember the axe.

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

Mathias played basically two styles of guitars...

Gibson explorers with stock pups...
vimtage Fender strats modded with Floyds and a DiMarzio Super Distortion

Through JMPs/800s and PLexi/Metal face 1987s...50W is VERY key to the bright crunchy euro sound....most of the heavy hitters of the day used the 50Ws...schenker...malmsteen..maiden...scorpions...etc etc

Mathias also used a tubescreamer...

and VERY IMPORTANT FOR THAT SOUND...back then about half the time he used a crybaby as a filter just like Michael Schenker..that sucker was about 2/3 down for alot of his leads...

he also used a Les Paul in the studio.

Rudy's tone was all 50W marshalls...MF/plexi, JMP and 800s and stock Gibson FLying Vs...50s..60s..70s models...

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

It always sounded to me that Mathias used some kind of Octavia pedal on some solo's? On `Still loving you' You can hear it, But he may have just doubled himself in the studio. Parts of the `Rock U like a Hurricane' Solo It's very prominent to my ears.

If you have an eq slightly dip the mids from 300 - 500hz and boost the treble at 2.0-2.5khz and use a plate reverb.

He did do alot of double tracking...just like Michael..but apparently he's got some weird technique he does with his pick where he can sound two notes and it almost sounds like a double track..like he's harmonizing...you can hear him do it live, and it's def not some kind of pedal....its almost like a slight chorus effect...he does it on "no one like you" on world wide live...

There's some (vague) info about it over at www.dinosaurrockguitar.com in his profile.

I've always heard the Schenker sound is a Custom in a V thru a JCM 800 2205. We'll find out before long, I have a custom on the way.

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album

well..yeah...but Schenker (Michael) did not play on any scorpions albums but the first (Lonesome Crow-1972) and Lovedrive (1979)....

When I was referring to Schenker re: the tones on Love at First sting, I meant Rudolph...that other dude with a V :D

As for michael....up until the late 1980s (meaning all his classic era) he used Stock gibson pups in his Vs (T-tops, shaws, etc) along with some Schallers around Perfect Timing (1987).

He then switched over to the Duncan custom and that was his sound through the 1990s...and not trying to dis the custom , cos I love it and have owned plenty..but Michaels tone went to $hite in the late 80s and 90s (IMO)..or rather...it wasn't nearly as good...he went away from 1987s (stock or Rivera modded) and went to 2205s...he ditched the wah. His tone frankly became quite boring and pretty much like everyone elses.

:rant over:

Coundn't find anything from the linkage (I'm lazy I geuss?):eek13: I'm thinking maybe he hits the note followed quickly with a pinch harmonic? If you have your delay set right? In theory the notes would melt together perfectly? And sound cool... Gotta go practice N' see if I can do it.:smokin:

here's his Profile

And the relevant text from it...

Also characteristic: Matthias uses light gauge Dunlop picks and often warps the pick using finger pressure. This warping technique along with his picking style lends an almost animalistic crying quality to his fluid, soaring lead sound. Matthias has also developed a technique whereby he can sound multiple notes at the same time by changing the position and angle of his pick. Jabs forte is his great European metal vibe, which is achieved by using a lot of bent and pre-bent notes to add a nice searing feel to his phrases. Like Michael Schenker and Wolf Hoffmann, Jabs uses lots of aggressive double-stops to add extra beef and intensity to his melodies

Re: How to get the super bright sound from Scorpions' Love at First Sting album
