How to get the "Supernatural" Tone?

How can I get this tone?



I know that with Peter this was just a Les Paul through a JTM45... I'll soon have an LP style guitar, what would a good overdrive pedal be for this sound? (Through a very clean amp)

I was thinking the Distortron but are there any suggestions?

You want a drive that's not too saturated. TS style drives are too thick in the mids. I had a Plexitone and it could nail that tone.

Yeah, I have a Bad Monkey that is pretty neat because there is a lot of bass on tap and you can really take the mid hump out of it.

I really don't like TS pedals though, I was even suprised I liked this one!


But I think both pedals look interesting. That tone isn't my "dream tone" or anythig but it's a pretty cool one and I'd like to have it in my arsenal.

I'm using a Hardwire SC-2 Valve Distortion with the switch set to "crunch" and I'm getting close to that tone now.

I know he's playing his Les Paul on this and it might be in the middle position, which on his, mean that the pickups are out of phase, which is why it kinda sounds like a Strat.

its a very piercing tone on that recording. Dont laugh...but i reckon a BD2 (modded is better) will do a passable approximation of that sound with a clean amp, but you'll have to play pretty loud to get that nice feedback hes using. I just tried it out to check- works good. Plenty of reverb and a nice analog delay as well will get you there.

I was always under the impression he used Orange amps and an out of phase Les Paul. (Greenie)

He started out using a JTM45 with John Mayall.

Then when he went on his first US tour with the Mac he got a bunch of Orange amps. He hated them supposedly and stopped using them.

Then he began using a 50w Bandmaster for touring and a Deluxe Reverb in the studio. It's basically what he used till his breakdown.


I read an interview where someone asked him what his favorite amp he ever played through was and he said this wonderful old Vox but he couldn't remember what it was. According to the magazine, they later found out that it was a Vox AC50 with a 15 inch speaker and a 12 inch speaker in a single cab.

His Orange stopped working and someone lent it to him for a couple gigs. He said the reason why he didn't like the Oranges was because they didn't have a good clean tone and they broke down a lot.


EDIT: The Fenders he used were the SF ones, the new ones at the time. People complain about the SF circuit and change it but he didn't have a problem with it!

How? What settings? I have that pedal, and I'm having trouble getting a good tone out of it

I have a Zvex Box of Rock too, that nails the JTM45 tone, but it really has to be played through a clean Marshall

gain at mid, bass at mid, treble at 10 + I'm using a Strat, which gets me closer to his "out of phase" tone...the real key is a good warm delay and lots of lysergic acid diethylamid.

It sounds like it has a little fuzz to the edges I would say maybe a Catalinbread WIIO
