HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

^ it's been done, i believe most recently it was dr newcenstein but i'm not 100% on that

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I did a search and could not found anyone that did a JB/59 hybrid?
I wonder if that would get me the LWAN tone in a kramer baretta? it has a old JBJ in it that came stock and i love it but want it to have a more PAF type vibe to it?

Ed... definitely not a JB in that guitar... it's somewhere in the overwound PAF/78 Model range... or even a 59/Custom Hybrid into a brighter amp

does the Custom/59b hybrid with a A2 have that tone? I hear something very unique in that 5150 kramers pu's tone, almost a single coil quality to it but with the beef/output of a bucker? it has a almost quacky strat clean tone with real good sparkle and beautiful mids when backed off and a aggressive but very sweet tone on ten???
what a PUP man!:eyecrazy:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

That's the sound ED... clarity combined with "muscle"... the A2 gives a sweet high end and a subtle spongieness to the bottom.

Now i have to try one!:naughty: i know for a fact that he is NOT using something tradtional like a stock 59 or a CC because the tone has elements of both of those pups in it.
that is what i hear coming from his pup on that show, both the CC and the 59 at once or all in one pup! LOL
When i had a CC and tried it in split mode i was like ALMOST this is damn close! it just needed a bit more umph and drive and that would have did it.
so in theory the 59 coil at the bridge side would give the CC's slug coil the extra kick it needed!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Has anyone tried using the C/59 (or any other hybrid for that matter) in the bridge with a sustainer of some sort in the neck? I've been looking through this thread and contemplating getting a 59 to hybridise my C5, but that set me to wonder how it might effect my sustainiac stealth system.

The general impression is that hybrids tend to smooth over resonant peaks in the different pups, might this reduce the sustainer's effect as it has fewer peaks to grab on to and with the 59 coil having a lower output than the custom it'd be replacing, or might it boost the effect because there are no big gaps in the frequency response range, etc. Any thoughts?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

this one is for bachtorock... You said your favorite set is 59/custom bridge and 59/jazz in the neck, correct??

if so, what magnets do you personally have in each pickup?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I recently acquired a '59 from Kam to splurge together with my Custom. In a fit of blind stupidity I made the deal without paying attention to the fact that he'd clearly stated that it was the standard spaced model, and my Custom is trem spaced.

However, I plowed on regardless, and over the weekend made the hybrid. I found that there was only a slight difference between the screw holes to hold the bobbin on the base plate, and the screws went in very smoothly despite a bit of an angle. The coil is held on nice and firmly, with the middle poles matching up well, and the spacing difference fanning out towards the E strings. Personally I quite like the look :)

I've not got a matching hybrid to compare against, so I don't know if the shape mismatch has any notable effect on the sound (but I'm not sure that I'd be up to hearing such a subtle difference anyways). I can say that it sounds great though :)

Generally A2 in the Bridge... A2/4/5 in the Neck depending on the axe...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I am going to make a CC/59b hybrid with the CC 7K coil at the front and the 4K at the rear. this is for coil tapping reasons and i want more punch,i will be using duncans spin a split mod with a 500k dual concentric pot.

How does the A2 CC/59b hybrid sound compared to a PGb? i have a pearly right now that is just killer, but this hybrid has the best of my curiousity.:naughty:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

That's the perfect set-up ED... the spin-a--split will put a slight more load on the pickup... if you want more highs try a 1 meg or a no-load pot for the split... or a mini toggle

thanks, i have the 59b coil just got to get the custom 7K coil and i am set:cool2:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Can anyone give me an idea how a Custom/490R hybrid with a ceramic magnet will sound?
I'm looking for tight thrash metal rythm here (think early Annihilator), but I'm worried the ceramic magnet will be a bit much for the 490R coil.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

You just need to try it man, the 490R isn't a super bright pickup, it's comparable to 59b with an A5, but even less bright than that, with a little more mid grind.

Some people really like a ceramic 59b, and you're only using 1 coil, the other will fill it out quite a bit.

Just try it.

I know, I should try it but it's a hassle and a worry I will wreck a coil again in the process, so I thought I'd see if anyone had tried it first.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

ED... HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?

dont like it, LOVE IT! how could you not love a pup that merges the CC tone with the dynamics and feel of a 59b:naughty: sorry forgot to post a short review . The CC/59b hybrid is everything that it was said to be and has a CC like tone but is much more open and dynamic, it has a perfect output i like it better than a stock 59b,CC or even the EVH frankenstein.it does a lot more than just VH tones BTW.I run a modded plexi and it sounds brown.
i put the hybrid in a old USA banana head kramer barretta with a push/pull 500K pot for tapping, the CC coil is closest to the neck. this pup is all that!
the A2 stays for now, may try a A3 but not till i get my new YJM plexi :cool2:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I really liked my hybrid with an A2 under gain but to me it lacked for cleans, especially rolling the volume down... kinda thin for me. I figured the A8 would give me a similar midrange "ONK" but with more push and evenness when the volume is rolled down or when it's running through a clean amp. I was right.

what amp do you use with it?
