HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Will operate soon again- some personal family business just passing as we speak that need taking care off- and will be back very soon.

The 59 is a braided one, the cc a 4 conductor..nextt ime I will get 2 -4 conductors for sure!

Thanks much BTR.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

so youre '59 is a 2 conductor?

i posted a guide on how to split a 2 conductor on these forums, check it out. https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=82469

im not sure if this will work with hybrid or not. anyone here know??

youre doing a '59/CC hybrid?? arnt the 2 too different? i know the alnico II pro/custom custom is good, and '59/custom is good right?? so im thinking you should switch out the magnet either in the '59 or the CC to the other ones so you have the same magnet in there. wouldnt that fix the problem, or at least make it sound better?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Good call on the magnet-was my next question. One side is painted blue..is that north and how should it be facing? Have it now facing to there where the big wire is getting into the baseplate.

I have switched wires. Still at areound 11,60 :-) Hope it sounds fat when I build it on.

Thanks
Remy

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

i think it could competely depend on whoever made the magnet. different companies paint it differently, and a lot dont paint at all. i believe that red is usually north and blue south, but again it depends. i know there are tools on how to know this, look on stewmac, or maybe someone has suggestions on how to find out?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Folks, if you do not like the ghetto look of electrical tape on your pickups after you are done making the hybrid, you can re-use the old tape that was pulled of the pickups. If the tape was removed correctly from the get go and you re-wrap the coils with it, it will look like the pickup is from the factory. Most of the time the factory tape has enough tackiness but if it dosent, just put a small dap of epoxy on the end and you will be all good.

When you need something classier than electrical tape... By the way this is A LOT cheaper than 3M's 11 Acetate black cloth tape @ around $20 per roll of 72 yards 3/8" tape.

Well I got one working well now. Readings are the same as they were-but now it sounds full and hot, not out of phase as it did before. I rwired the 2nd one as well-have to build it in to hear how she is.

Thanks for all the tips-thanks Bach for your extra wiring info and the starting this tread.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I did not wax them/melted the wax. I thought the wax is needed inside the coils-and I have not messed with those..I guess it depends on taste? In my field of knowledge enginering we say -tight is tight (baseplate-coils).

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I usually heat the whole assembly with a hair-dryer as shown in the step-by-step... it gets the wax flowing in all the nooks and crannies and makes certain it is as tight as possible.

How do you like the sound of your correctly working hybrid?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Thought I'd post this question from lp_gem since they are common questions...

"Hi Bach,

great post about the hybrids, you have me intrigued with curiousity!

Ive got JB at the moment, thinking of doing a JB/Custom hybrid

what's the sound of this combination compared with the JB? and what happens with the magnets? does one of the hybrids have an A5 and the other ceramic?

in your descriptions of the custom/59 hybrid are u talking about A5 or ceramic?

also u not the jazz/59 hybrid works well... what does this sound like? what would a JB/jazz hybrid sound like? too much difference in output between the 2 you think?

sorry for all the questions! pickups are expensive here in australia so i always try to get as much info as i can before commiting to anything!

cheers,
michael"

The 59/Custom Hybrid is my favorite and always uses Alnico... A2 or A5 depending on the exact response you want...

The JB/Custom is excellent... I just put an A5 one in my Goldtop Les Paul yesterday... it is a more modern, fatter, compressed tone than the 59/Custom Hybrid... it retains the signature JB mids with the fuller bass and clearer highs of the Custom 5.
When using the thin Ceramic from a Custom you will get a slightly leaner bass and a more aggressive midrange response...

The easiest description of the 59/Jazz Neck Hybrid is the traditional PAF tone with a less woofy bass and more articulate highs... the mis-matched coils allow more harmonics to come through and this produces a more complex and 3-dimentional tone.

The hybrids seem to work best when coils are combined with their next step up in the wind chain so I don't recommend a 59/JB...

59/PG/Seth/Jazz coil(42 gauge) ---> Custom coil(43 gauge)
Custom coil(43 gauge) ---> JB/Distortion coil(44 gauge)

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

so, would an alnico II pro / custom custom work well? i remember someone talking about making one a few months ago, and he said it was like the perfect rock tone coming out of it, but i just want to hear from other people.

thanks.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

hmm, do you have any description of it or anything, of what it would sound like or anything that could be of value to form my opinion wehter to do it or not, and if maybe there is a better hybrid that includes the alnico2pro?

thanks, and sorry for not including that in my last post, shouldve been there...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hey Bach,

Did you ever try JB/Custom hybrid with A2?
Yes... I felt it got a little too soft and compressed sounding.
The 43 and 44 gauge winds really need a more dynamic magnet like the A5 or Ceramic...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Back again-I've been playing on the 2 hybrids I made last week (see earlier posts around 27-8 and earlier). So far I had not much time but 1 thing is good: the CC screw/59 slug with A2 sounds great-alone and in combi with an Alnico pro 2 in the neck. It has 11,4ohm so no mor ehassle So thank you BTR/men for the advice

Now, the one in a Kramer Baretta ( 1 hum, 1 pot) set up sounds weird...like the tonepot is half way backed off? It does sound decent with my distortion/gain pedal on. (so that's why I did not notice at once-play at low volumes while testing also new pedalsettings)) But clean it becomes very clear there's lack of higher and mid tones..output itself is 100% up to par , so kinda strange?

I wondered if I soldered in a 250K pot by mistake? That, I will look into 1st thing tomorrow. It is not the condensator, sounds the same with it cut loose.

Again, please advice?

Regards,
Remy

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

ok, i might need a little help on this one guys.. i tried to do a hybrid today, on some crappy old epiphone pickups that werent being used anymore, so im not taking a big hit from this, but still, id like to get them together again.

they were 2-conductor not 4 so it was a bit different than what the pics were showing. i HOPE one of you guys can help me. im going to put up some pics once i get them taken. i HOPE you can help!!! this is going to be to put it back to normal. than maybe i can start over to try the hybrid but taking the "proper" precautions first.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

edit: better picture, easier to see with this schematic of it. hopefully this is more helpfull.

on the top pickup, the top coil (screw one) the white wire coming out of it has a tiny strand of that red copper wire that is wrapped around the coil. so it most likely hooks up to the bottom coil. im guessing the red wire that comes out of the main wire connects to the bottom coil too. the black wire of the screw coil seems to have a bit of solder on it, so i think it might be grounded too, same with the bare that comes out of the main wire. can anyone tell me if this is correct or not?

ooo more detective work done...

on the bottom pickup in that schematic, the bottom coil, the white wire that doesnt hook up in one end, the one loose end i see a piece of coil wire (red copper wire), so im guessing this means that it probably goes to connect to the top coil. and the loose black wire that connects to the top coil seems to be melted at the end, so i think it probably goes to ground with the bare. (i remember there being 2 grounded). is this correct? if it is than that fixes both of them!!!

im going to show the schematic with all that stuff done. might be clearer than what i said above..

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

In follow up for the dark sounding 59/cc hybrid in a slanted lead HB/Kramer Baretta setup.

Tried and changed the pot-500k it is now for certain.

Still a dark sounding pickup, very ful sounding fat leads, not so singing highs-Is till get the impression some highs and mids are muted? Next step is highering the screw slugs, but in general lower the pickup maybe a mm more away from the strings will 'lighten' it up. (I think I need more highs than less fatness...stil-an easy try).

Any input is welcomed.

Cheers,
Remy

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Remy... it should sound just like the other Hybrid... maybe you have one of the coils slightly grounding out... I once had a problem like that in one guitar and it was the output jack making slight contact with the sheilding paint in the control cavity.
