HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

A2Pn and PGn would make a nice mix... very similar coils with different wire insulation

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Nice to see you back BTR. I've dying to try a PG/Custom Hybrid. How is the PG and 59 different in a Hybrid?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Slight detour as this thread has me thinking....

Are the coils on a prails mismatched? Been digging their sound in HB mode lately...

Yep, although I don't know if they use different wire size or not - not that it matters with the patent, seeing as they use very different amounts of wire. But yes, the p-rails are mismatched. What I'm amazed about with them is that the folks at SD got a single coil in series with a p-90, and furthermore, that they made it sound good.

Oh well, I don't care how they do it as long as they keep doing it. Great stuff.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

CAN you effectively use one moded HB like this in the bridge with a single coil in the neck and no middle pick up?

you can do anything with this pickup that you would a regular humbucker, it's still got standard humbucker dimensions so i don't see why you couldn't.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

you make two

Yup. Since you're taking half of two pickups, you're left with the other half of the same two pickups. Make two hybrids and put them in another guitar, or in the neck of the same guitar, or sell it to Jake

I put both of mine in the same guitar - 59b/JB (black coils are the JB).

p.s. Finally found some knobs that fit those tiny EMG pot holes

i did that one.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I recorded a song using my 59/C5 - but I doubt you're going to hear anything in it that would stand out regarding the pickup.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Ok, this thread is really inspirational. I've had a few interesting ideas.

1) I have a Godin LG with an Alnico II Pro in the Neck and a Custom Custom in the bridge. My idea was to get a Stag Mag and replace one of the coils from each of the formerly mentioned pickups with the coils from the Stag Mag so that I can coil tap the Godin and get a proper single coil tone.

Which coils would have to be replaced? The top or bottom ones. I'm not sure how the coil tap wiring works although I suppose I should check that out.

2) If I do this mod, I will have two coils left over, one from an Alnico II Pro and one from a Custom Custom. I want to get another pickup and make hybrids for neck (combined with alnico II pro) and bridge (custom custom) for my Les Paul. (Standard Premium Plus)

Currently, I have Burstbucker Pros in it and my complaint is that the tone is uneven. Basically, the bass from the neck pickup greatly outbalances the lack of the bass from the bridge one. The guitar is really equipped to do everything from blues and jazz to very heavy uber gain saturated rock and the result is that the low to mid gain tones sound thin, brittle, and terrible with the bridge pickup. Contrarily, I'm looking for something that sounds much more even with a mid emphasized classic crunch. I want pickups that are better balanced so that I can choose more than one pickup for clean and gain tones.

For tone, I'm kind of torn. My absolute favourite Seymour Duncans have to be the Alnico II Pro and Custom Custom. The '59 is a close second. Still, I'm thinking combining the coils left over from the Godin mod with something more high output like an invader could be interesting. (I hear PRS combines Alnico II bars with ceramic ones for warmth and higher output) About the Gibson, it really is my main axe so I want it to haul but at the same time, it would be fun to take a risk and try something slightly unique. In my experience, pickups either work or they don't work with any given guitar so this could be the best thing ever or it could be terrible.

Thoughts on this?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

What's the position for the stag mag? Try sticking to neck w/neck and bridge w/bright hybrids. IIRC, BTR said that the bottom coil produces a decent single coil tone.

Lately, I've been tempted into trying a '78/Custom Hybrid but both those p'ups are my favorite ones. They're "rare" cream HBs and both have a certain mojo to them, so I ain't messing around with them.....:disappoin
