Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Put it in the neck! Put it in the neck!

Seriously. I have two and the one in the neck is not moving. In the bridge it was just ok. I think I'll do what IanBallard did and try an A8 in the bridge pickup.

The neck and bridge I have are Trembuckers (TB59/TB14), with the Custom coils on the outsides.

The neck switched to parallel mode is just stellar.

Individually the coils are a little boomy for most things I've tried, but the series and parallel options rock! I did like the individual coils to get a single-coil stratty sound with a certain amp setting.

I've never used the neck pickup for rhythm, only for solos and some blues. But the C5/59 in parallel lets me use it for rhythm without getting muddy, and without losing that neck sound when playing solos or blues.

I've only tried this in the neck of my Squier VM Tele Custom, so I'm not sure what it would sound like in something like a LP. I will try that at some point as well.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Well, the neck version would not be too far off from a DiMarzio "Norton" at all. Just stick an A5 in there and it would be close. Would be interesting to try, particularly the opposite of mine, being the Custom screw (hot) coil and the 59 slug.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

It depends on your skills. I think it could be done.

Elaborate please. What skills are you talking about, exactly? I've never really messed with my pickups like this...

I have a TB spaced Distortion [I actually have two but I think I wanna keep one stock], two standard spaced Jazz', and 1 standard spaced Custom 5. If I could make two Dist/Jazz and two Custom 5/Jazz hybrids to try in both the neck and bridge, that'd be sweet. I think one of the Custom 5/Jazz hybrids especially would sound good in the bridge.

Hmm. Can't remember if I tried a Norton in the neck of this guitar. I know I didn't care for it in the bridge, just like the C5/59 ... interesting.

My hybrids do use A5's. My neck hybrid is the C5 slug towards the neck and the 59 screw coil towards the bridge. I'll try flipping it around at some point, maybe I'll drop the other one in as well to see if there's a noticeable difference with the coils as well.

Mixing a trembucker and a regular spaced seymour wouldn't work, would it?
The screw coils need to stay where they are so they'll line up with the baseplates. The slug coils could be swapped. However, the Trembucker bobbin is actually wider than the humbucker bobbin, so the pickups will look a little odd, if you look at them up close.

If you're only concerned with sound and not aesthetics (even if only for testing) I'd say go for it.

With the Trembucker the screws that hold the bobbins to the back plate are .1" further spaced than the Standard. So, for it to look halfway decent you would have to redrill the holes in the back plate to get the bobbin to center.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

It might be interesting to see how a mixed bucker would work, having one bobbin "normal" spaced and the other wide-spaced. An interesting phenomenon occurs when the string is between the poles of the north and south coils instead of directly over both of them simultaneously. Some say EVH's idea of turning his Gibson humbucker at a similar angle to a Strat bridge pickup, is part of what gave his guitar its unique voice, among other things.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

SH14?....Sorry, I don't understand the question....My hybrid is a 59 coil and a Custom coil...

I see that SD has a pup called the SH-14. It mentions that it came to be by contributions from the forum. Here is the description of it.

description
Developed by contributors to our web user group who replaced the ceramic or Alnico 2 magnet in an SH-5 Custom or SH-11 Custom Custom with an Alnico 5. Compared to the SH-5 and SH-11, the Custom 5's tone is more vintage, with less distortion, but it's still very strong and powerful. Clean sounds are rich and full with enhanced presence. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

No it's not the same, the SH-14 is the Custom Five (A5 magnet) which is the same as a Custom Custom SH-11(A2 magnet) or a Duncan Custom SH-5(Ceramic magnet). This Hybrid is a different animal (A Custom coil and a 59 coil combined).

Hey all... I purchased Rod's extra hybrid. Really looking forward to hearing this bad boy. I get accused all the time of spending more time playing with my gear than I do actually playing it. I hope this (pickup mods) is not the start of more distractions. :scratchch
