How to make a Super 70?

Re: How to make a Super 70?

A Gibson rep told me, that the 490R is the same as a T-Top, except for the magnet. Now, if it's actually true, or not, I don't know. But, I've heard from people that have tried the mag swap, and they say it works...

Re: How to make a Super 70?

Wow, for reals? Cuz 490's = bloody depressing pups. Any cheap mod to turn 'em decent would be a godsend... If only the masses knew! :omg:

On the topic of knowledge, anyone got any manufacturer recommendations or tinkering-derived personal wisdom concerning string distances (heights) for A8-equipped humbuckers, specifically Maxon Super 70s? I'd been messing around with mine cuz this thread got me in the mood to get that axe all perfect, and I think I messed it up even further... Also, it seemed like the pups were sitting very NON-parallel to the strings, at pretty harsh angles actually, but when I "righted" them, it sounds way worse, what gives? Did I just miss the good height range by a ridiculous amount, or is there an actual point to following the curve of the archtop, instead of parallel to the strings (I've got the 3-screw setup that lets you do angles)????

PS if you could, in millimeters please, and I'll lurve you forever... inches are pretty greek to me

Oh yeah dude, A5 490R is tits. It makes an even more awesome hybrid with a Screamin' Demon too.

+1

I have the 490R and 490T in a Faded SG. The A2's were so weak to my ears, so an A5 went in the 490R and an A8 went into the 490T -- never looked back.

Just curious, other posters are stating that an A8 should go in the 490R... that's 'R' as in Rhythm... as in the neck position pickup. So people put an A8 in a 490R, and then move it to a bridge position to approximate this S70 sound thing???
