so i dont have any fancy smancy stuff right now, all i want to do is plug my microphone into the microphone jack in my computer and record something real quick in audacity... but the f-ing thing wont WORK!

how do i get the computer to recognize my mic?

Re: how to plug microphone in?

Double click on the volume control icon in the system tray and make sure your mic controls show up. If they don't, go to Options>Properties and make sure the mic input is checked. That should fix it.

Re: how to plug microphone in?

Buy a Line6 Toneport GX! ;)

But yeah, you need to go into the control panel>sounds and audio devices>audio and make sure the mic is selected and stuff in there.

Re: how to plug microphone in?

so if thats all gravy but the mic still doesnt work, about when can i pull a jolly and tastefully rid myself of the computer problem?

Re: how to plug microphone in?

Any time you want, if you have a tree large enough...:1:

Have you tried another mic?
What kind of mic is it?
Does it need phantom power? (although it would take a couple of adapters to plug an XLR into a computer.)

Re: how to plug microphone in?

It may sound silly, but are you sure it's in the right socket? ANd it's not muted? I've had times where WIndows has set my mic to mute automatically.

Re: how to plug microphone in?

ive tried another mic, the mic is switched on, ive checked all of the levels, made sure to click all of the right boxes, and im sure i plugged it into the microphone jack.

how would i know if windows has muted it?

Re: how to plug microphone in?

have your iTunes playing, so if you plug it into the wrong jack you will hear Madonna come up out your microphone, then you'll be sure :D

Re: how to plug microphone in?

BTW, pump up the MIC LEVEL Slider in Audacity, all the way

Dynamic mic with no preamp needs a lot of "gain"

Re: how to plug microphone in?

update the driver for your sound card?

does the mic need batteries?

does the mic work with any other application? (e.g. yahoo chat or somesuch?)

is audacity configured to accept input from the mic input?

good luck
