How to remove small amounts of rust from the chassis?

What's up guys? I want to remove very small amounts of rust (just specks here and there) from one of my Gibson amps. It's really the only thing keeping this from looking almost brand new (besides the knobs, they're messed up too). So is there a way to do this without scratching/damaging the underlying metal? I know some methods include soft grade steel wool and chemicals, but I want to make sure before I do anything that whatever I do won't screw it up and leave a bunch of tiny scratch marks.

Any ideas? Thanks!

That'll leave tiny little scratches. I've got 1500 grit, and ven it leaves tiny little scratches. A guy on thegearpage recommended rags and WD-40. It's working beautifully so far.

I do appreciate the idea though!

WD was gonna be my call....

Scotch bright pads are worth a try - yhose green scrubby things you use on pots & pans. They have a distinct advantage over steel wool - they don't leave shards of steel all over. (Did you ever try getting steel wool bits off pickup poles?)

Of course in your case, whatever dust you leave behind will be conductive steel. Make sure you wipe the chassis out real well with naptha or WD40 after you're done scrubbing.

Yeah I'll definitely be completely cleaning it before it gets all assembled again. Thegearpage told me not to use scotch brite, cause it can leave little scratches, striations. Definitely don't want that. They mentioned a few chemicals (gel type things), and I can't remember the names. Lemme go check...

Simichrome and MAAS. Anyone have experience? And where can I get them?

Thanks for the help. She's already looking 10 times better, if I can get these last few nagging spots of rust off she'll really shine.
