Any guitar of value...A HSC is a must ! But if it's a POS ? Like the Ibanaz GIO I sold for $85 on ebay. Bubble wrap it ! lotsa bubble wrap. Get a good strong guitar box ( your local guitar store may have one to give you,Or just take it from them on trash night
) Then stuff newspaper in the box so the guitar don't slide around.

Double box it. One triangle shaped box and one rectangular box. Wrap up the guitar, put it in the triangle box, then put the triangle box in the rectangular with bubble wrap around it. Youd be suprised actually. Any guitar you see in a store that doesnt come with a case comes like that including many $500-700 guitars. They usually come in in very good shape(i unpack 10-20 guitars per week) and a few come in dinged up due to shipping(3 in 100).

+1 on the double-boxing. Last time I bought a guitar on eBay, my wife was like, "So you're keeping the guitar -- we can throw the box out, right?" I said, "Gaaah! No! Never throw out a guitar box". It's always good to have one around for out-bound shipping. I also think the stores are reluctant to give them out to their "competitors" - eBay sellers.
However, last time I sold a "good" guitar on eBay (an original '74 Tele Custom), I went out and bought a case for it, then stated in the auction that it would be shipped in a brand new case. People then bid accordingly, and I presumably got my money for the case back in the final price.
