How to smooth out guitar neck?

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

What year is your Standard? Am Std or regular? Mine is only a couple years old has has never been ticky since day one.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

Could be the OPs diet
Chicken grease is insidious

Bought used guitars that loomed like they hung 8n a kitchen somewhere

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

See mine feels satin and smooth straight from Ensenada. Humid where you are? When I think Sticky Strat I think of the vintage glossed models, not the Standard.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

I've got a MIM and it's not an issue with food. It's just the guitar came from the factory with too thick a finish.

Ok
Calm down

Not judging

Ok maybe a little judgy ..........

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

Here's something I learned the hard way: don't go too hard on the finish. It can lead to removing the protective finish and lead to the neck getting warped later down the line. .

It's pretty tough to go that deep, but it is possible.

Is that a fact? No wonder the neck of my Charvel (which is unfinished) won't stay straight.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

Let's all tone it down a bit. Maple can certainly warp if not finished or baked. No need to act like this is new information.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

So far you're batting %100 for asshat comments today.

No really. I was actually referring to my So Cal. I have turned the rod at least 3 full turns but the relief won't go away. The neck is just oiled, no finish.

Here it is:

Oh my bad. I'm just a bit edgy today, you know how work can be some days. I misinterpeted your post as aggressive sarcasm. I'll redact my comment.

Edit: Looking back, I really don't know how I managed to misinterpret it.

Your neck is sealed from the factory. Vintage Charvel necks were oiled, but modern Fender are sealed to mimic the raw feel.

Something more severe is going on with your neck. Three full turns from what starting point?

Wow..THREE turns? I think the truss rod might be broken.. :(

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

I like to use fine grade steel wool

Steel wool has NO PLACE near an electric guitar. It sheds crumbs of wire that will stick to the magnets of your pickups and possibly get in the electronics of your axe shorting it out. Also, those crumbs can hurt your fingers, get under your fingernails, and stick into your skin. Use Scotchbrite....

It's not vintage, it's 2011 MIJ Pro Mod.

Yes, 3 full turns, probably more, and I am not exaggerating. First it had 11s, then I changed it to 10s.

The rod isn't broken cause I could feel tension when turning it, and the neck actually managed to stay straight for 3-4 days. Then the problem surfaced again.

I've given up on it totally. Some of the frets are sticking out along the edge. Maybe it's just permanently bad wood to the bone?

Funny, most of the old techs I know disagree with you. I've never had a problem and I've been doing it that way for more than 25 years. You would have to be really sloppy to have the problems that you describe.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

Well, I've been doing repair for 40 years..... So I guess I'm an old tech. If you MUST use something other than Scotchbrite, use brass wool. It's non-magnetic.

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

Yes, I know it is a promod, hence my comment:D

Three turns is a problem. I would back the rod completely off until someone looks at it.

Chadd, no tech worth anything would ever use steel wool. Find a new one if yours does. The steel fibers can cause all kinds of problems and there is no reason to use it over scuff pads

Re: How to smooth out guitar neck?

I’ve got a green ScotchBrite here that I just can’t bear to use on my neck just yet.... lol

OT
What do you use to polish frets, if not steel wool?
