How would you compare the Dimarzio ToneZone with Duncans?

Re: How would you compare the Dimarzio ToneZone with Duncans?

If that's so, I guess it should suit me. :fingersx:

Besides it's kinda cheap, so no big deal...

Re: How would you compare the Dimarzio ToneZone with Duncans?

It sounds great in a Basswood guitar that is bright. It sounded really, really good in my Charvel Predator...until I put a Blues Saraceno in...that was even better.

However, the TZ is a kick ass P/U.

The TZ is *not* tight compared to other pickups. It maybe tight in your particular setup....but out of all the pickups I've ever tried the Tone Zone was the least tight.

This is why it works well in the brightest of guitars.

You may think I'm crazy, I would too if I didnt hear it for myself, but the Tone Zone is tighter than a Paf Pro and the Invader. Maybe you just got unlucky with the TZ.

Nobody think about the Norton ?
It is a less bass heavy TZ , for those who don't like mud .
Dimarzio describe it as a Fred with more power and more bass but the same mids and harmonics ; isn't tempting ?

Re: How would you compare the Dimarzio ToneZone with Duncans?

I put a TZ in a Xtremely trebly RG550 in hope of getting a better/rounder tone. But it just sounded like mush. I then put it in my soloist that was kinda trebly, and it sounded OK but still very muddy with alot of gain. If you roll off the gain in sounded better (less mud) but sounded kinda dull. It has alot of mids that kinda push out the other frequencies to my ear and in my hands YMMV. I don't know of a Duncan that is quite a Middy sounding.

I'm with Xeromus on that one...sounds like a spiked JB. Cool sounding but I thought the JB was a little "tonier". I had the TZ in a Paul,though...it may sound better in a Strat-Style.

get an Evo and stop complaining about tightness after you put it in ;)
I'm only experienced with the Air Zone(said to be a vintagey version of the TZ) and it actually is quite a cool pup. Definitely compareable to an invader. Not as loose as people said but not really tight either.

Re: How would you compare the Dimarzio ToneZone with Duncans?

so fred is not tight ,its made for long lasting tone with its own character!!!
So if you like to "shred" ,go with a duncan distortion.Tight ,agressive ,enough growl and scream ,lots of midds(wich is the most important thing in guitar tone) and cool harmonics. If you like to play slower riffs ala bon jovi or stuff ,go with evo2!!!But every dimarzio i testet and used have their own character in tone ,wich have its own tonal life.Distortion obeys well ,and lets you more "yourself" i think. And marty friedman tone is possible too!!!.give it a try!!!
