I know he has a ****load of Marshalls on the stage all the time. But normally if you plug a strat into a Marshall and crack the gain it will not sound good.

Re: HS-3 and YJM

Yngwie's tone is very processed, tho it may not sound like it.
His tone on his 1st solo album is actually very overdriven, but not particularily heavy; it has a nice, glassy sheen and vintage vibe to it which would not return until Odyssey.

Re: HS-3 and YJM

Why would a Marshall player ever rely on a pedal to provide OD? Granted, I boost my Marshall overdrive with a modded TS-9, but that's different. Did he use it as a boost?

Re: HS-3 and YJM

sometimes they use it to add the effects of overdrive (sustain, harmonics, etc) without the distortion. I know that;s what SRV did. he had like two ts-9's or something at almost no gain to get that sustain and he also used the tone knobs as eq's for his tone, along with the wah as a filter.

Re: HS-3 and YJM

Um... Isn't the HS3 a stacked humbucker and its like 22K output or something?

22K is pretty hot.

That's why resistance specs are misleading. Only the top coil is active, and the pickup is HOTTER if you disconnect the bottom (dummy) coil. At that point it would only be 11k. But at only 93mV (according to DiMarzio), there are lots of hotter singles out there.

That's true...no tubescreamer, just the DOD 250
Nope - see the link I posted above and check out the setup for the Facing the Animal sessions - he has a Tube Screamer in the chain as well as the DOD250. Both stomp boxes are dimed except for the tone knob!!

here is what you are not getting...Yngwies Marshalls are early 70's metal front JMP amps, which are very close to late 60's Plexi amps and are not the crunch monsters that JCM 800's and 900's are, that's not to say that they will not produce some killer nasty tones, but they are far cleaner that what most (younger) people think about when you say Marshall
