HSS strat.... Texas Specials vs YJM Fury

Re: HSS strat.... Texas Specials vs YJM Fury

Well, LOVE the JB.

I have decided to move on from the Texas Specials. I'm going to try STKs.

The neck tone I'm looking for is probably the STK-4. I love the sound of the 7n, split (the demo on SD's site). But if I get STKs, I'm not messing with splits. Part of the reason I'm looking at them is the noiseless aspect. I see tho a 7n/4m seems to be a popular combo? And I guess the 7 would have an easier time "keeping up with" the JB?

Here's my question:
I drop the middle pickup right down. It gets in my way. I have read where Fralin recommends a stronger middle pickup for people who do this, to retain better quack in the notch positions... that makes me wonder, would a 7 be better for the middle, with that consideration? (JB / 7m dropped low / 4n)

Ideally, I'd buy all 4: n/m 4's and n/m 7's, and just do the experimentation. But I'll lose a tone of money on resale for the ones I end up not using. So If I could maybe get an idea of where the best place to START (which 2 pickups of these)....

So long as you live in the USA you have a 21 day exchange policy, so you can trade them out if you want. I'd say try the S7n/S4m and see if you can still achieve a desirable tone with the middle in a good location for you, then change it out if you don't like it.

You also might be able to order them Shop Floor Custom so that the polepieces are flat and out of the way.

Well, the point of having all 4 is to have instant comparison... and also to not have to wait 2 weeks for the exchange lol. But if I can get lucky and hit it right the 1st time...

The STKs are a very mild stagger... I think they will be ok. It's not like the crazy vintage stagger on the Furys and true singles. But I was not aware of "Shop Floor Custom", thanks for that!

I drop the middle pickup a bit, not flush, but just a bit. I use an STK-S4 and it works just fine. That is one great sounding pickup.

Mine's not flush, but it's close. The catch is, the neck has to be up high enough to balance with the JB. THAT makes the middle pickup even weaker (comparatively, in the notches) when I drop it... my #2 position (bridge middle) sounds fine, but #4 (bridge neck)sounds a bit weak. I disconnected the middle tone control, and that helped a little, but it's no solution.

Of course I could just get used to playing "around" the middle pickup, I guess, but I hate changing my technique for a guitar (I'm a tele guy, and a rocker at that... my technique is alot like SRVs, I play hard alot of the time. But the ergonomics of me + guitar have me picking right over that middle pickup.)
