Huge Problem - Please Help.. ?

I'm experiencing a problem that I've never before had. When I touch my strings, I get a hum that is impossible to play over. I know when the reverse happens it's from a bad ground.. but this happens with all of my guitars.. I have no idea what it could be. My setup is as follows:

One of various guitars ----> Boss ME-50 ----> Fender Stage 160

Any help would be appreciated.

strange.... never heard of a hum happening when you touch your strings..... strange

If you're not grounded when you touch the strings, I guess your body could act as a giant antenna... Either way, it'd still be a grounding problem...

Yeah, that sounds like good advice. Start by changing cables. If that eliminates the problem, you have your answer. Hope it works out.

Thats a popular misconception. If the guitar gets quiet when you touch the strings, then it has a good ground. The guitar is grounding you, which, as HolyDirt said, is acting as a giant antenna. (Being about 80% water.)

What you have sounds like a bad ground. Possibly the bridge ground wire has broken loose. If the cables were bad, you wouldn't get much, if any, signal at all.

Re: Huge Problem - Please Help.. ?

To troubleshoot, simplify your signal.

1. Guitar directly into amp.
2. Guitar into multieffects into amp.

If the hum continues under number 1, change your cable. If it continues, try another cable. If it continues try another guitar.

The basic troubleshooting principle is to simplify the signal chain, then add one component at a time (individually), making changes to isolate the problem. Then add one extra into the chain at a time (1 pedal, two pedals, etc.).

Until you isolate the problem, you cannot fix it.

i used to have that problem and they just had to replace my output jack. cost 50 bucks so i would recomend doing it yourself if you have the tools.

but first i would try lesstrats idea and make sure it isnt a pedal, or a connector, or your cord, or your amp.
