Hum Cancelling Split JB in Parallel?

Good day,

I'm rewiring an old guitar of mine with two JB's to have coil splits on both pickups separately using a Push/Pull Pot. Is there a way to wire it so that when both JB's are split, that the middle position (both in parallel) is hum-cancelling? I think I just need to have opposite coils in parallel, IE the North coil of one pickup and the South coil of the other or vice versa.

If anyone has an exact wiring diagram for this, that would be fantastic.

Thanks,
GreatOz

Yes, but it's a little tricky. Not rocket science. You've got to flip the mag on one pup. Are you comfortable with that?

Oops. Let me back pedal a bit . . . you only have to flip the mag if you want both slug coils. Or vice-versa. If you don't mind doing bridge slug with neck screw, it's a piece 'o cake.
Red/white of bridge short to ground. Red/white of neck short to hot, or black, of the neck pup. Film@11.

You want to select opposite coils. So when you split one you connect the series lead to ground.

On the other connect the series connection to hot. That cuts the other coil.

This is an old trick that people seem to have forgotten.

Bridge slug with neck screw is usually the way to go anyway.

GreatOz,

Once you have selected magnetically opposite coils to have hum-canceling, you can then rotate one or both pickups 180° to achieve - if wanted - the effect that proximity - or lack of proximity- has on the resultant tone. For example, arranging the active coils so that they are both inners, produces the most Strat-like quack (pickup selector switch positions 2 and 4 of a Strat, that is). And arranging the two active coils so that they are both outers sounds "like" middle position of a Tele that has two singlecoil pickups.

Thank you for the responses, I will definitely use them.

Also, for the singles in parallel, thank you for clarifying which tone I would get, namely strat-like or tele-like. My suspicion was what you suggested since the layouts would be similar, but wasn't quite sure. I think I might go for the strat-like tone.

Cool, but don't overlook that there are two other "proximity" options besides Both Inners and Both Outers - so check those out as well. Those being Staggered Favoring Neck, and Staggered Favoring Bridge (that is my own terminology - not sure if there is a more popular or official way of referring to these other two).
