Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

This is the deal: start guitar (not fender), alder body with maple neck and fret board.
Type of configuration needed is Humbucker / Humbucker with split on both.
Type of style and sound, mostly fusion, some rock, vintage blues.
important – when playing on the neck with heavy lead sound, the guitar should scream fat scream, when the neck pickup will run split, I want hear it kind of a vintage.
When played a heavy rhythm on the bridge pickup, I want it to punch in the face, not to sound "brown" but clear and not fudging all over, a nice cutting through sound.
If ill run the bridge split, I want hear it vintage more like.
If running both pickups split (inner coils are on), with clean sound I want it bells crisp haven

I don’t have a clue where to start, last time I used Duncan's I ended up 65% happy, had SHB6 bridge , SJBJ-1N , SL59-1N neck.
Any recommends are most welcome.
Thanks.

Humbucker* An yea you will never get a vintage tone splitting a humbucker. You can get a single coil sound for sure but it will never sound 100% like a single coil as the construction is different as far as magnets and pole pieces are concerned.

Re: Humbucker / Humbucker configuration recommends

Thanks.
It need to be Humbucker because I just can't stand the sound of a single pup on the bridge, it's just so thin.
Considering the limitation, what split Humbucker do you think can give the most vintage kind of sound ?
Let's say I do go for the 3xsingle configuration, what is the most fat single for bridge available?

Thanks.

Try P-Rails for Humbuckers, maybe?

I would also agree on the P-rails based on the versatility you are looking to get. You get even go for p-rails hot for he bridge if you like to but I believe normal will be sufficient for you.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

Language barrier, guys, adapt and overcome.

Strat-style single coils get their unique tone mostly because the magnets are the poles that run through the pickup coil, whereas a humbucker has a magnet under the coils, not through them. Splitting a humbucker will not sound like a single coil, unless you use the 5/2, which is 2 single coils on one plate.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

I've only split the Steve's Special and actually used it and it was a really good single coil tone actually. It sounded in between a Tele and Strat. The Steve's Special as a whole sucks though so I wouldnt recommend it.

Re: Humbucker / Humbucker configuration recommends

Thanks guys.
This P-Rails looks VERY interesting, I wasn’t aware of it.
However I'm not sure I have understood the specs…
It can run as a full Humbucker (both coils=ON) or as a P90 (split one side) or as a single (split to the other side) ?
Is that correct ?
What pots should I use, I guess a 500k? Any recommends for this ?
Thanks.

Re: Humbucker / Humbucker configuration recommends

Very good !
Any suggestions for wiring ?
I'm gona use only 1 knob for volume, that’s it.
If I would like to use ALL combination I will need 3 mini switches with 3 position:
2 switches (one for each pup) for all 3 modes (p-90 / single / Humbucker) on each pup.
1 switch with 3 positions to have either bridge or neck or both.
Too complicated, too much to play with wile playing.
Any idea ?
I would like to use all 3 modes on each pup separately and have the option of selecting which pup is on and which is not.
Pots, what should I use ? brand ?
Thanks.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

Forget about these humbackers. The true key to good tone is to get yourself a ham****er.

Re: Humbucker / Humbucker configuration recommends

HumbUcker, got it......:)
You'll have to excuse me, English is not my first language, let's see you guys write in Hebrew LOL.

Anyway, I really think I'm going to try this pickups, this idea of 3 modes is really cool.
I have asked for the pots, do you have any suggestions ?
Regarding the Triple Shot Switching Mounting Ring, I need it in white but it's not only the color problem, it looks to me like it is really annoying (small pin switches) to deal with wile playing, I need the pup selecting be quick.

Ill either go for 1 "big" 3 way switch for pup selecting and another 2 small ones for the modes or a total of 3 identical switches, unless you guys have a better idea, I'll be happy to hear.
Thanks.

I like 500k pots with P-Rails. That's my personal taste, though.

The Triple Shots are actually really easy to use in a hurry. They take a little while to get used to, but you can switch them in a hurry once you get them down.

I don't really know how I would do the P-Rails if I decided to go without the triple shots. Someone else can probably give you some good ideas.

SD is recommending 500k pots in their diagrams so thats where I would start. If they sound too bright you can always go for 250Ks later on.

There are bunch of p-rail wiring diagrams here without the triple shots. But TS is much easier to wire and use IMO.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

My Screamin Demon sounds awfully Stratty when split.....any agree there?

Over to the P-Rails conversation......Yes, with a 3 way toggle switch, you can use the P-Rails as any of the 3 (p-90, "Strat" rail, or a really nice, biting Humbucker sound).
I had my Schecter S-1 30th Anniv fitted with a P-Rails set (and 2 small 3 way mini toggles) and I get 18? (I suck at math) different tones depending on how the switches are set up. It's awesome. I can play bridge humbucker and either switch it to either SC mode, or switch to neck in any of the 3 modes.......very versatile. here is picture....see the 2 switches near the tone knob?
My guitar tech didnt know how to wire this, but SD has diagrams on this very website.....I just printed it and faxed it over to them.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

Love the shining floor, who does your house cleaning ?
Joking….

This is a really nice guitar, love the color.
Its exactly what I'm going to do, 1 "big" 3 way switch for pup selecting + 2 mini toggles for pup mode selecting + 2 knob for volume and tone and that's it !

The nearest diagram I could find is this one, but it is for 4 knobs, 2 volume + 2 tone.
Any one knows how I wire only 1 volume + 1 tone ?
Thanks.

Re: Humbacker / Humbacker configuration recommends

So, anyone with an idea for this wiring ?
Volume + tone knobs.
A 3 way switch for pup selecting from 2 P-Rails and another 2 small 3 way toggles for pup status selecting (either one of the coils or both) ?
Thanks.
