Humbucker Choiceses ….Any Help??

Hello Everybody,

I have a Fender Performer HSS and I want to change the stock humbucker but I am lost in all these different SD Humbuckers. My goal is to have the closest sound to the Seymour Duncan SSL 5 single coil when I use the push/ pull coil split on my guitar.

is that possible? Can any suggestions?

welcome to the forum!

youll never get a split humbucker to sound exactly like a single coil, the ssl5 is a hot single coil, so youd want a high output humbucker. with that in mind, what do you want out of the humbucker besides the split sound?
 
jeremy Hello Thank you for the welcome, well tbh I am not that much into a humbucker on a strat. I prefer a single coil but at the same time I don’t want to lose what the humbucker provides. So I was trying to get best of both worlds as much as I can. I am into Classic Rock and I love the sound of the SSL5.
 
jeremy Mincer Also If I to add, There is another option that I can change my pick-guard and turn in it to a SSS and get that SSL 5 (I just love it) and be done with it. I understand that contradicts with me wanting to keep the Humbucker but I thought that I share all my thoughts and ask the experts like you guys point me in the right direction.

Well, an SSL-5 is a thick sounding single coil, but doesn't sound or respond at all like a humbucker. If you ant a humbucker for classic rock, look at the Whole Lotta Humbucker, or even a 59.
 
An SSS pickguard is always possible

If you don't like humbuckers
Why suffer with one

Pickguard is cheaper than a pickup

Do that
Put that SSL5 in the bridge a d forget your worries

I also like the Jazz neck in the Bridge
Sounds awesome with single coils
 
ehdwuld Hello, Thank you so much for your great answer and providing the other point of view, regarding these options just wow, I will definitely look into all of them. An extra also that SSL 5 comes with the tapped option and that can be replacement to my push / pull pot for coil split. I am big fan if the Laney.

Mincer I thought about WHL and 59, pearly gates. Your answer was a reassuring one. I think now I just have to make up my mind about which way to go. Thanks again I really appreciate it.
 
Any flavor of Custom, or the StagMag, are the most Fendery-splitting humbuckers I've used. The Custom almost quacks on its own in my Jackson, with the longer scale length.
 
given that all of the pots are 250k I'd consider a brighter HB to help offset the darker effect of 250k pots for a HB.

250K is perfect for single coils. I agree with the Pearly Gates suggestion, especially since fender, I think, used to use PGs for a bunch of their HSS strats.

Fender used Pearly Gates Plus, which is A5 trembucker spaced.

You can't go wrong with any of them. Pick the EQ you want.
 
I am thinking for classic rock and the desire to move from a classic humbucker tone a Phat Cat P90 could be an interesting option and would open up the sonic choices of the guitar greatly. Also the pick guard will not have to be changed.
