Humbucker For Slide

I'm trying to figure out which pickup to get for my Kalamazoo for slide playing.the guitar has maple neck, rosewood fretboard, mahogany body. It's very lite and thin body. I will be putting it somewhere in the middle. One pickup a volume knob but no tone knob. I use brass or chrome slide mostly. I want a smoother tone not jangly but with bite.I use Marshall and Fender amps. Idon't know if I need a bridge or neck pickup. I want to sound like Dwayne Allman[insert wiseguy comment here:________________________].

I'd go for alnico 2 magnets. A Seth Lover would be nice. A PG might be to bright. A Custom Custom would also be very nice for slide and a little hotter.

My vote would be for a Seth Lover or Custom Custom.

I would think the Custom Custom would be great for that considering it's warmth and mids.

That's what I was thinking...plus it sounds great with the guitar's volume turned down: starts to remind me a little of a P90. Lew

Re: Humbucker For Slide

Would the Custom Custom be a little too fuzzy wooly? The David Lindley/Jackson Browne P-90 sound is great but I would like something less fuzzy or wooly.

That's not a P-90 on those Jackson Browne classics like Running On Empty...Lindley used a pre WWII Bakelite Rickenbacker lap steel with the 1 1/2" Horseshoe magnet ...probably through his early 50's "Order of the Python" Fender Deluxe amp with a Celestion/Vox 12" Silver Bulldog speaker.

He recovered his early 50's wide panel Deluxe in Python covering!

My favorite lap steel is the Ricky Bakelite...I have a '36 and a '46.

No, I don't think the CC would sound overly fuzzy or wooly at all...I play a bit of slide myself. Lew

Most of DA's slide work was done on the bridge pup. Seths, CC, Ants will put you in the ballpark. Or buy a Fillmore bridge pup from Jim Wagner. Very nice.

Re: Humbucker For Slide

I was aware of the lap steel Lindley played I was thinking of Brownes guitar player that played the Les Paul Jr. at the Hall of Fame show. I was a little surprised how much he sounded like Lindleys lap. The lap sound is bigger with wider vibrato. I was seeing one thing and hearing another I should have taken the easy way around. I have played slide on '63 Melody Maker for a long time. It had one Gibson single coil on it and i put a P-90 on it that I got of my Gibson ES-225 [I think].I know, Iknow I was young and under the influence of... All I know is the was an Xacto set involved and the air was very hazy. There was a lot of that indoor fog in the seventies. Anyway I love the P-90's but I want something tighter but not harsh.

lol....I'm sure Lew can relate to doing things to guitars from that era.;)

I think that Kellie S. told me once that Derek Trucks has a CC that was provided him by Seymour Duncan. If he has one, you know it is decent for slide.

Re: Humbucker For Slide

The Custom in the bridge of Strat works well for slide. I made my own slide out of a piece of Steel electrical conduit- I like it better than Brass or Glass, LOL.

I've heard that too. I think he had a CC/59 combo in his Washburn. I saw him play and got to talk to him this past weekend. He's playing a '61 re-issue SG these days, and he said that he's using stock pickups. I assume they're '57 Classics or Burstbuckers.

That is right - he had a CC/'59 combo in his Washburn. That is what Kellie told me. As for his SG, his pickups are '57 Classics - very chimey and clear. Nothing special about those, even though his tone sure sounds phenomenal.

A good friend of mine named Greg Humphreys (who used to ring-lead Dillon Fence in the early '90's) has played with him a good bit, as his new band opens up for Derek's on occassion. Greg told me that he has a guitar tech that takes apart his BF Supers before every show and tweaks everything. I mean everything. So, don't be too fooled by people saying that ALL of his tone is in the hands. A lot of it is, but the other part is due to very good sounding vintage gear (that is very carefully manicured).

Derek truly is an amazing player. There is no one else like him or that produces a similar tone.

Cool. I saw Hobex open for Derek last year. I felt bad for Greg because Derek invited him to play on a song, and Greg broke a string first thing.

Re: Humbucker For Slide

Hi Mel

My .02. For a smoother sound, I'd use a coricidin bottle. Metal's a brighter tone. What amp are you using? For bridge pickups, I know the Antiquity works well. I haven't used a Pearly Gates for slide, but I am pretty sure it woulld be great. Firebirds are likewise great for slide. Mine is brighter and louder than the Antiquity Humbucker in my Les Paul. A CC could probably work well, especially if you want a smoother tone.

BJ,

That is very cool that you know Greg and Hobex. He is quite the picker himself. And, talk about his '65 SG sounding good through his old Bassman head? He gets great tone! Got to love those PAT# PAFs. His neck pup just sings!

He and Liz have recently moved to Asheville, and I'm sad they are no longer in Charlotte. But, Greg assured me that they would be coming back through this summer with Hobex and Dillon Fence. Perhaps I'll see you at a show!

Sorry for hijacking the thread since this is :offtopic:

Just to go back to your original question - if you want to sound tonally like Duane, you will need some key components.

1. PAF like pup = Seth(b), Antiquity(b)

2. A good non-master Tube amp from Marshall or Fender = BF Pro, BF Super, 100W Super Lead from late '60's. Heck, even a Blues Jr. will work.

3. JBL D-120F's speakers. These are older speakers that have a very unique voicing. They are the key to getting Duane's tone. You can find them on E-Bay like I did. They are about $125-$150 a piece in good condition.

Mix them all up and you will get pretty close to Duane's tone. PM me if you want further details.

Re: Humbucker For Slide

Hey Lee!

What cabinet do you have the JBL's in?
