Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

Anyone here done it? That seems to be where it got it's namesake, so surely someone has tried this in the bridge position.

Thinking about dropping this bright, single coily sounding humbucker into the bridge of a single humbucker strat with a 250K vol and 250K tone pot. Looking for the humbucker look on this guitar, but with quite a bit of single coil attitude.

Oh boy. .. that will be bright. Imho too bright. Like an icepick through my skull .

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

It will be bright and weak but no worse than most strat pickups.

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

Do you have firsthand experience with it in the bridge position? I've read of a few folks using them in LP's in the bridge and they don't seem to think it's icepicky. They said it's not particularly strat-like sounding either.

What would be a good, bright humbucker in the bridge? Maybe a FRED w/ a 500K pot? Pearly Gates? Full Shred?

Can't say I have tried it in the bridge, but it is my favorite DMZ neck pup.

The HFH isn't as bright as people think it is. It is very transparent so it tends to take on the character of the instrument it is in. Contrary to its marketing claim it is not corrective surgery or a thick coat of paint.

Don't do it! It'll blow the fillings right out of yer teeth!

It's a weak pickup. Worked pretty well in the neck of my tele, but that thing would be a liquid nitrogen ice pick in the bridge!

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

give it a shot. see what it sounds like, you don't know until you try.

EDIT: Play around with various cap values and cap types as well, see how it works.

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

For the lols now, I want to put the Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position on a maple body, maple neck/fretboard, steel floyd rose with a single 1M volume pot into the jack. Anyone want to hear? :D

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

although I have one in the neck, it's one of the DiMarzios I've been trying out lately and I like it. don't see why it should've be given a shot in the bridge position. worse that can happen is you don't like it and switch it back.

LP's are darker sounding guitars just by being made of mahogany, vs. the alder or ash that your strat is likely made of. And even darker still if the LP in question has no maple cap. So the bridge HFH's icepicky-ness is probably being subdued (thank goodness) by that. And I am a HFH fan - have it in the neck of my Ibanez RG and it's perfect!

Still, give it a go with the HFH in the bridge on the strat, and let us know.

Suggestion: a pickup whose spec more closely matches what you are trying to do, is the Dimarzio Eric Johnson humbucker, bridge version. I do not have firsthand experience with it myself (I do own and love the NECK version), but almost all reviews of it have been very positive and frequently mentioning "brightness" and "single-coil like", and there is a couple decent audio/video samples on YouTube to judge by. So, I would start there first - unless you already own the HFH - then sure, slap it in and see.. er, "hear". haha

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

So, has anyone here actually tried it in the bridge position, or are you just guessing/theorizing? Because the "boy, i'd imagine that'd be an icepick" doesn't really help me out a whole lot.

kingswebe-- thanks for the EJ bridge suggestion, I'll do a little reading up on that one. It's tough to find a humbucker that doesn't really sound like a humbucker, but more of a single coil. If I'm buying a new pickup and don't have anything that I can use it for in the neck position, maybe something like the EJ would be more appropriate.

I'm thinking a fat hybrid, but wired in *parallel*; that surely won't sound like a conventional humbucker.

Pfft, be a man and run it straight to the jack.

I haven't, but I tried a Double Whammy in the bridge straight to the jack in a Strat once and it was bright as hell. With 250k pots it probably would have been fine.

I've been running all my neck humbuckers wired in parallel and they made the neck position usable for me where they were always muddy before. That would also work well as a medium output brighter humbucker, with the option of wiring it normally if it's too bright.

Re: Humbucker from Hell in the bridge position?

Can't do straight to the jack, Dom... I use the volume knob way too much to change my attack.

The idea of a fatter humbucker, but run in parallel, might be a cool idea. Just put a mini switch on it for series/parallel and still have the option to go w/ a rip roarin' thick tone if i want to.
