Humbucker HUM problem

My tech installed a Duncan Custom in my axe the last week. But as soon as I plug in I noticed it was making a strange noise, like a single coil would. And when I switch to position 4 (single coil middle-full bridge) the sound stops.
My tech told me that one of the pickup bobins was damaged or something like that, but he said he had repaired it. I must say that when he first installed the custom it sounded horrible, like out of phase, the strings seemed out of tune, etc. I took my guiitar back and he said everything was wired the right way.

It sounds good now, but the hum is still there.
Any though´s?

Re: Humbucker HUM problem

That sucks...

I had all sorts of similar problems trying to wire up a HB with two STK+'s in my strat. Position 4 always sounded weak/out of phase and hummed. I tried switching some wires around and could never get position #4 & #5 both in phase and hum free. Finally (after like 4 months), someone here told me to wire the pickup backwards (I think I did Black/Green to the split, white to ground, red to the switch) and if finally worked! All the positions sounded better too. The Classic Stack's+ (being humbuckers too) may have been the reason, but something may just be wacky with one of the pups, I'll never know I guess.

I think your tech is not fully troubleshooting the problem. I don't blame him because it's a bitch trying to keep wireing up a pup not knowing what will work. Maybe the pup's constructed wrong from the factory (it'd been known to happen) and you may have to wire it up differently to get it to work right.

Re: Humbucker HUM problem

Yeah, if it's going dead in position 4, you've got a problem. The series link is messed up. If you feel like looking under the pickguard, you can check and see if the wires are going to the right places. The big four conductor wire coming from the bridge pickup is what you're tracing. The green wire and the bare or braid wire should go to the back of a pot. The black wire should head to the switch, and the red and white wires should both go to a different lug on the switch. Like so. That diagram shows a single coil sized humbucker, but the wiring is the same. That's a good starting point, and if it's still not in phase in position 4, you can switch the green and black wires.

You took it to a tech, (s)he should make sure it works, period. Take it back to him/her.
