Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Jazz neck and a Screaming Demon, two Duncan's most wrongly named pickups, are a dignified combination. Put a shirt and tie on 'em and send them off on Sunday morning. They are mid output at best and have very controlable highs and seem smooth to me.

I have a CC and a 59N with an A2 in my les Paul type guitar that I use for worship
I also use my PRS with a single antiquity p90

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Usually when I'm performing to a mixed age group, I choose either a 335 or a Les Paul with Classic '57s, rather than say, my Historic LPs with the brighter Burstbuckers.

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

I am currently looking to replace the stock pickups in my PRS Semi-Hollow. I've been reading a lot of reviews for different pickups and I think I have narrowed down my choices. It'll be either a Pearly Gates set or Alnico II Pro Slash set. The stock neck pickup in my PRS is too muddy and I want something cleaner. I have heard that the Pearly Gates may be to bright but I played on a guitar with Alnico II Pro pups and found the neck to be a little cleaner but still muddy to me and am afraid that the APH2 Slash won't be any different. Anyone have experience with any SD pups for worship that would work well in my guitar?

Dude, wanna a pickup to worship? You must order from MJ one of my SD custom shop SD 'Tyrannotitan' humbuckers, its pickup number 188575. You'll never stop putting you guitar down, fully bro !!

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Here's a question that may point me toward the right direction. The PRS is a mahogany body which gives it a warmer sound, would it be appropriate to pick a brighter pickup and it'll balance it out? For example, for those who used the PG bridge claiming to be too bright, it would balance out more in the mahogany body?

You know, the truth is you should be able to use whatever your favorite guitar has in it. I suggested alnico 2 pickups like the Seth Lover or Antquitys because the highs are a little smoother and mids are thicker than with alnico 5 pickups.

Those are single conductor pickups though: no coil splitting options. If you want to coil split then the Pearly Gates or AII Pros allow for that because they come with 4 conductor cable. If your guitar does not have a coil splitting switch or built in option than it's not a concern.

I find it easier to get a good tone at low volumes with alnico 2 humbuckers...and at high volumes too. :)

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Honestly I don't think you can beat the Pearly Gates neck for this guitar and this application. Sweet sounding, easy to control, very friendly to the mix. The bridge position I think is more debatable. If it were me I'd go up to a 59/Custom Hybrid which is a little more full-bodied while still having great articulation.

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

When playing in Church, I typically use my EMG 81/85 equipped Tele, an EMG SA equipped Strat or a LiveWire Hot equipped Strat. I back the gain off the amp a bit but still like my sound to be HUGE...

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

Name aside, I honestly would think of the PG and AII Pros for that application. Exactly the two sets you thought of. I might even do a mix and match. AII Pro bridge and PG neck, for instance.

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

I've played a lot in church over the last 30 years. I've played more in church (Unity of Boulder, Columbine Unity, etc.) than I have in bars!

Volume is always an issue and I've always had to play quieter, with less treble and with a less overdriven tone in church than in bars. There's a mix of all kinds of people and all ages from young to very old, and not all of them want to hear aggressive sounding rock tones...or even aggressive sounding blues tones. It's just not appropriate.

I think Alnico 2 humbuckers are the ticket. Thick mids and chimey but smooth highs make it easier to get sustain and a tone that's fun to play with but which won't put an ice pick in anyone's ears.

So, the usual suspects: Seth Lovers, Antiquitys, Pearly Gates, maybe AII Pro's.
Gotta agree with you on that.A2's ,I'd go Seth's then PG just because of the neck one then Ant's .IMHO

Re: Humbucker Pickups for Worship

I used a C5 when I played in church.. But was using a strat. PG is a GREAT all arounder from sweet to rockin. and Probably is a great compliment to the semi hollow...
