Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

I'm looking for a fullsize humbucker of medium to high output. I guess like a Custom or a JB. The thing is that when I split it I want it to sound like a good Tele bridge pickup. Most of the stock pickups on guitars that I have tried, don't even sound like a good Strat pickup when split. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

The only thing I can tell ya is that lots of people want that as well...yo should try Barlo Buckers (If they ever get made!!!). The Duncan Stag-mag is made to be split...I have never used one. Belive it or not I have had the best results splitin g a bucker when It was a Duncan Distortion! Thats just me...good luck.

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

From what I remember Donzo makes one over at the lace Custom shop. However, I haven't tried it, nor do I know much about it

Split Fires: Killer Tele when split, or a Warm Fat Humbucker, minus the “mud” when in series also a huge Tone Tele in parallel………………………………….$133.00 each

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

i have never tried it but i think rio grand makes a twang bucker, that might be something to look into. Good Luck Butch

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

I'll go back to my G&L ASAT I had with a JBb/59n. They both sounded really good split. In fact I just ordered a double cream 4 wire 59n for my LP so I can split it. The JB I liked better in the split rather than full postion. I am not a big JB fan, I find it actually cuts through too much for me, it's like a freaking laser beam. I split a CC in my Rat Fink Strat and I love the sound of it. Can't quite compare it to any particular pup for you unfortunately.

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

I am definitely gonna take my chances with the Duncan CS shop. The basic idea is to get a HB which gives %100 PAF HB tones but does a great job in delivering JD kinda tele lead tones.

The basic idea (that guy who invented fire insists is mine, but that still needs to be proved by the CS shop people when I contact them  ) is the following: I'd ask for a PAF HB done with #42 wire. BRIDGE: The screw coil would be ~4.00K. The slug coil (maybe with a hybrid stagger as on JD, that is with slightly raised G and D) would be tapped. When the HB is split it would deliver ~7.50K, and when HB is in series the slug coil would be like 4.50K. So the extra 3.00K (non-reverse wound comparing to the rest of the slug coil) would be active only when the HB is split and the slug is active. The neck would have the same design, but the values would be 8.00K when HB and 6.30-50K when split.

I will contact MJ shortly and ask her if that's feasible and would do what I want it to. Definitely will post what she has to say in here.

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

By the way mine is for my LP, the one in my avatar, that I am using in my gigs. No matter what I do with the controls on the LP and amp, I gotta carry a tele for the clean tones. But if that design I am talking about works, well it'd be great.

That's why if you say for you the most important thing is the tele lead tone, then you could get the slug coil with a5/a2 magnet rods. For me the tone I don't want to compromise is the PAF tone, and the tele/strat kinda s/c tone is secondary. That's why I don't think magnet rods in the slug coil is a good idea for me.

But then again I gotta ask all of those to MJ and get her opinion. Afterall she is the expert. :cool3:

Yes!! The Variax is a guitar that can go all night without switching. But, I want a "real" guitar. I wanna go with an H-S-S config but the dang humbuckers sound crappy split. A JB full and a JD split would be uber coolness.

Dr. B, I look forward to the results of your MJ conversation...

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

Hey Butch -

Have you considered an S-S-S layout with a JD in a Tele bridge and maybe a Strat APS-2 in the middle? The middle & bridge pups in series would sound close to a humbucker...

Just a thought - it depends on whether the PAF or the Tele bridge tone is your highest priority.

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

I found that the JB with 500k pots sounds really close to a Tele bridge pickup when you split it.

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

I think it would be hard to get a full-siz humbucker that will sound like a good tele when split, but I do remember trying a tele that had a custom custom in the bridge and it sounded really good in full mode and good as well in single coil mode.

Also, FYI, I remembered it sounded really sweet when mounted quite low, I remember having it closer to the strings and it started getting kinda harsh...

Very interesting....

I remember hearing the JB's clean sample and it sound pretty "spanky"....

Re: Humbucker --> Tele Bridge Model

i think the CC sounded kind of like a tele split........probably even more so in the guitar youd be putting it in

Muy Grande?

I actually have one. It just sounds like a Tele bridge pickup with a little more beef to it. It's not hum-canceling and it's not a fullsize humbucker.

That's the second time I have read that. I might have to look into that one...

I think he means the Muy Grande Humbucker, which does a credible job of the whole twang thing. I had the Tallboy in the neck and the Muy Grande in the bridge of my Carvin and they were great for bright, twangy things both in series and when split.

I also like the CC. Split, it sounds close to the tele middle position when combined with a Jazz or an APH.
