Humbucker "Vent Holes" in Bobbins

I'm talking about the little "window" hole on the left side of most Duncan pickups. First off, what is the purpose? Just to have the windings visible vs. an empty bobbin?

Second, what sort of bugs me; on a real Duncan, the hole is always to the left of the pickup if the screw coil is on the bottom. On a Duncan Designed set, they seem to be on the bass side of the pickups, however it's intended to be oriented (so the hole would be on the right side of a neck pickup if you flipped it to have the screw coil underneath the slug.) I sort of prefer that as futile as it is. Any background?

They actually cover this in the Duncan FAQ's or Q&A. But, it's a lot of info to sift through to find the answer.

Finally found it. 'Tooling holes' is the obvious/boring answer, isn't it. Still think they look more "finished" when all on one side.

Cool. While we're on the subject, I wish the web-master du jour would organize those Q & A notes into a reasonably searchable database.
Lots of excellent info there. If you can find it. ;)

That part of the site never gets the attention it deserves. Lots of great knowledge there if you have a few hours to sort through it.

Some of us have learned a whole lot, just by "sort through it" as you put it... of course, that occurred when it was humanly possible to do it (meaning the search engine actually worked). In its current state, it's so hard that's not even funny.

With the advent of a new USA president in 2020, MAYBE the Co. gets somebody to make it work? We can only hope, isn't it? ;)

I would love that to all be indexed and searchable, but I don't envy the person that does it. I read it all a few years ago, but I look through it if I am searching for something specific I remember reading on there. Good thing is that Google has indexed a lot of it.

Re: Humbucker "Vent Holes" in Bobbins

Indexing data is not manual. You get database software, point it at the source (those pages) and wait a bit. Then you can search your database all you want. All it requires is someone technical in web/software to buy the software, kick off the indexing process and wire the search back into the main web site.

It just doesn't sound like SD has someone hired with the right job title to manage that end of the business. Don't know if it's a lack of interest or thinking it's not valuable time spent, but IMHO the more time anyone spends on the site, the more exposed they get to all the products, the more enthusiastic they become about the company and the more they are driven to eventually buy something. My 2 cents, based on my experience.

Databases aside, has anyone actually answered within this thread that they help ingest and drain wax?
