I think most people use humbuckers by default as they are usually somewhat hotter-thus pinch harmonics and crunch are easier to get. Personally, I get great metal tone using singles all the time. I used the stock pups in my 2002 ash strat for metal, and just recently switched over to a PGn and FSb. Don't get me wrong, it's all a taste thing; with humbuckers, the guitar is not nearly as versatile IMHO...it's just that I have enough S-S-S strats to cover that ground when necessary.

I've heard from reliable sources that the QP single coils are good for hard rockin' as well and maintain some single coil tonality.

I prefer the sound of singles myself. :)

Thanks Farkus, thats the only thing i was worried about with single's was what kind of harmonics id be able to get, as wise as a pup goes i was thinking about the Hot Rails my self for Metal.

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

Look around: what are your favorite metal guitarists who get a tone that you like using? Mostly full size humbuckers I would guess. And a big amp like a Marshall. Lew

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

didn;t iron maiden use single coils in their strats for the first album?

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

Find a cool unorthodox way to get a metal sound. You wouldn't believe the Slayer tone I get from my stock California Strat's single coils...

yeah man, the lead dude (forget his name, forgive me Maiden fans) used singles in his strat.... as crazy as it was for metal, it worked pretty well didn't it? :laugh2:

:burnout: HAILS, POCKETS!!! It is pretty amazing what kind of famous tones you can get from stock pups, I get close to old metallica, nearly perfect SOAD, and some nice Pantera sounds out of my Ibanez SZ520 stock buckers :cool3:

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

I get my heaviest tones from my Strat's stock pickups.

Of course, it came stock with a DiMarzio Super Distortion .

And for really heavy rhythm work, my other guitar is equipped with a JB. It's nice and heavy, but the cleans are pretty much none-existant (even tapped). It works excellent for me when drop-tuned (drop C and D standard, it's as far as I go).

I love neck single coils, awesome warm when used clean, but I never did like bridge singles.

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

I prefer humbuckers but I think single coils can do it easily. Think of Impelliteri and Malmsteen.

Re: Humbucker vs Single Coil 4 METAL

There's too many variables with guitar gear to just say you MUST have humbuckers to pull off a metal tone...you just need output and distortion. Granted, humbuckers and hi-gain amps are an easy way to get output and distortion but there's alternate ways...haha

Some folks don't like them, but I really like the HR pups. I use one in the neck of my HM strat...its got plenty of power. Also, it's very focused...I'm a 'neck solo-er' and it does what I want with no complaints. I'm a Malmsteen fan, who uses DiMarzio HS-3's, but I like these pups 100% better. Have some limited exp with the bridge version personally, but I do have one loaded in a pickguard with a HRn and I'm getting ready to transplant them into my avatar strat, when time allows... :)

My favorite humbucking setup ever was HRn and JBb in a strat coupled with a JCM 800/5150 amp setup.

The HRb screams for harmonics...the neck ain't bad either even for Zakk pinches, as long as you've got the right amp and EQ going on.
