humbuckers for a 335: 59, fralin, or lover

Re: humbuckers for a 335: 59, fralin, or lover

Howdy,

I'm satisfied with the tone of the '59s in my ES-335. Of course, I wish these P/Us were covered, but that's another discussion! I would think that a 335 through a JTM 45 would get you pretty darn close to Clapton's tone from the 60s; you'll have to do the rest. ;)

I think the 59's in a 335 are the rockin set, while the Seths are the best version of the traditional 335 tone.

I've still got the stock 57 Classics in mine, just because the solder and harnesses inside are more than I want to deal with.....I hate to admit.
I'd like know whether the 59 set, Seth set, or 59B/Seth N would be best.
I like the idea of staying traditional with this guitar, since it's wood tone is so pure....I want to stay with pure vintage pickups to keep that beauty intact.

Don't forget the amp you're using... you'll probably want to match a middy Marshall with A5 and a bright Fender with A2, yadda yadda.

My Seth never gave me feedback trouble. If you're not using a stack, you'll be OK.

59s are a wondeful pickup set. I had a pair in my guild, and I am seriously considering putting a pair in my Gibson 335 instead of the gibson pups.
"Thin" is not the word i would use unless you are comparing them to an invader, and play metal thru a dual rectifier. Clear, natural, sweet, responsive - much more fitting terms for these pickups.

I fooled around with a lot of pickups for my current 335 including early T-tops and I ended up with an old set of '59's that I had from a previous 335...it's 90% there; now it's up to me and the amp.

I've got a Seth Lover in the neck of my Faded V and I haven't had any problems with feedback, and that was with a punk band (yes you can use the neck pickup with punk music lol). I put it in my Ibanez Artcore before it went in my V and it was amazing. The Seth Lover is probably the closest thing to the pickups that were in original 335s that SD makes.

I have an Epiphone Dot 335 and ended up putting a '59 Neck, Seth Lover bridge into it. It sounds great in both positions. I only wish that the bridge was a little bit louder. The neck is perfect, clear, and round sounding. Honestly, I'd lean towards getting the '59 set if I had to do it again, they're great pickups.
