Only one of the 3 bands you mention there use active pickups (Shadows Fall), but I would say if you want a sweet metal tone go for the EMG 81/60. The combo smokes in my SZ, but I'm thinking about trying an 85 in the bridge eventually.

I had dual 60's in my Hamer when I bought it (previous owner install). They were very crisp, clear, and had tons of definition under ridiculous amounts of gain. If you'll be drop tuning and setting your amp to kill, the dual 60's might be a good idea.

Well in my death metal years I used to get good hi gain tones with the gibson 500T. Then I tried the EMG 81, that I still got, but i can use this baby under low gain and get some pretty cool hard rock and even blues tones. depends on your guitar and amps.
If you want a Duncan, I would go with the Distortion.

If you play Pantera, dude... The man had DIMEBUCKERS. The only pick up that will reproduce Dimebag's riffs identically. All other junk has too much mids that will drive me crazy and frustrated. I got my DEAN FBD and also put the Dimebucker on an Gibson SG special worn brown. I was able to pull Randy Rhoads stuff just right. In the other hand, I put a JB on my LesPaul and there's too much mids in it. It's good to play KISS ("LOve Gun"), but there's no way to play Dime's on the LesPaul. I pulled the EMGs from the LesPaul. I think they go well on my other SG because it is a thin body guitar.

Actually, he only recorded Pantera's last one or two albums with it. The rest was his old, trusty Bill Lawrence.

I believe that he would have only used the Dimebucker on Reinventing the Steel, because I'm pretty sure Great Southern was still Bill Lawrence.
You can still buy Bill Lawrence pickups, by the way (got one in my Dean ML), just make sure they're the right ones.

+1. I think the only way to guarantee it is to call the Lawrences themselves and order from there.
Also, apparently he didn't record all of RTS with the Dimebucker, but I could be wrong.

Yeah actually I'm not even sure he used it on RTS, might have been too early, that was around 2000/2001. I think he at least used em on Damageplan though.
