Good ole Ed. Met him in my LGS shortly before he passed. He had just moved here to MT and we chatted for an hour. Larger than life character... in whatever way you want to take that. I had a negative opinion of him from my days at The PRS Forum... But when I met him he was pleasant enough. Seemed to be full of good stories/experiences, and BS all at the same time. I certainly enjoyed the chat after all those years of thinking of him as some kind of villain.

Nah

That guy had that youtube/twitter/etc hustler and snakeoil salesman vibe. If anything, going off his rants, he seemed quite hopeless at the actual business end, just good at self-advertising and preaching

I would be in favor of a Japanese company's quality coming to Gibson...would definitely be for Yamaha buying Gibson.

I've heard that Line 6's customer service sucked before the Yamaha deal. But yeah, they bend over backwards to make things right with folks. I'm a member of the official Helix Facebook page, and the Line 6 guys are on there regularly helping folks out keeping up with customer service/relations stuff, and there are quite a few posts of random people singing their praises.

Yeah, I haven't had to contact Line 6 since Yamaha took over, but they were absolutely terrible to deal with before. I remember going to their booth at NAMM and asking questions, and everyone there had the attitude of snobby music store employees. I am happy things seemed to have changed. On the other hand, I don't think Gibson is actually for sale, and I am pretty sure there is someone out there in the US who can turn the company around.

Yeah I'm putting 45% probablity over the next 2 years on this one-
And I do see all of the upside-
  • Best quality and process in the mass production industry,no one else is all that close
  • Inovative
  • Good branding and understand how customers think
  • Price/value points will be competitive

On the other hand, as a US citizen, it's another example of the US losing out, and in this case it's entirely Gibson's fault and they could still fix it if they wake up.

As mentioned before, it's also not good for the industry to become monopolized- competitive pressure is almost always a good thing (unless you ignore it and wish it would go away as Gibson has done).
