Hunt for Henry's replacement started

Re: Hunt for Henry's replacement started

If Ed Roman were still alive today he would make the perfect CEO of Gibson. He did briefly work for Gibson in the 1990's I think as a consultant.

Good ole Ed. Met him in my LGS shortly before he passed. He had just moved here to MT and we chatted for an hour. Larger than life character... in whatever way you want to take that. I had a negative opinion of him from my days at The PRS Forum... But when I met him he was pleasant enough. Seemed to be full of good stories/experiences, and BS all at the same time. I certainly enjoyed the chat after all those years of thinking of him as some kind of villain.

Nah

That guy had that youtube/twitter/etc hustler and snakeoil salesman vibe. If anything, going off his rants, he seemed quite hopeless at the actual business end, just good at self-advertising and preaching

Re: Hunt for Henry's replacement started

I would be in favor of a Japanese company's quality coming to Gibson...would definitely be for Yamaha buying Gibson.

Re: Hunt for Henry's replacement started

had a JTV-69...it started sounding like a moose with a bad case of indigestion...called Line 6 customer service and got zero help...I kept pestering them....Yamaha deal closed and suddenly the sent me a shipping label to return it for evaluation and repair...they replaced the main module, set up the guitar and shipped it back no charge...it work perfectly and I sold it immediately (fun to play with for a while but really not much of guitar....true story....I think Yamaha came in a step one was to pound customer service into the company...Yamaha knows how to run a successful business and build high quality products...but they never built anything as good as an EB MM Silhouette...:unitedsta

I've heard that Line 6's customer service sucked before the Yamaha deal. But yeah, they bend over backwards to make things right with folks. I'm a member of the official Helix Facebook page, and the Line 6 guys are on there regularly helping folks out keeping up with customer service/relations stuff, and there are quite a few posts of random people singing their praises.

Yeah, I haven't had to contact Line 6 since Yamaha took over, but they were absolutely terrible to deal with before. I remember going to their booth at NAMM and asking questions, and everyone there had the attitude of snobby music store employees. I am happy things seemed to have changed. On the other hand, I don't think Gibson is actually for sale, and I am pretty sure there is someone out there in the US who can turn the company around.

Yeah I'm putting 45% probablity over the next 2 years on this one-
And I do see all of the upside-
  • Best quality and process in the mass production industry,no one else is all that close
  • Inovative
  • Good branding and understand how customers think
  • Price/value points will be competitive

On the other hand, as a US citizen, it's another example of the US losing out, and in this case it's entirely Gibson's fault and they could still fix it if they wake up.

As mentioned before, it's also not good for the industry to become monopolized- competitive pressure is almost always a good thing (unless you ignore it and wish it would go away as Gibson has done).

Re: Hunt for Henry's replacement started

I am going to submit my resume. The Gibson board will either think I have the biggest balls in the world and fly me in for an interview or think I am a lunatic and get a restraining order. If I were Gibson I would go with lunatic.

You can be a lunatic and still have big balls...

Re: Hunt for Henry's replacement started

The difference between being called a lunatic and being called a genius is one thing: success.
