HX Stomp - this might be it

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

We’re ready to read your review when you are. ;)
I'm working on it \m/ Had clinical rotation hours most of the day, but I'm heading home.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

So, I was able to come home and plug in after shopping for groceries. I can honestly say that I won't be able to do this thing justice with about 15-20 mins of messing around. I'll comment on what I do know for sure. It sounds just as good through the headphones as with the Yamaha HS8s. I accidentally went direct with the HS8s and it sounded damn good. Very dynamic with a punchy bass. I used my strat for a bit. I'm going to plug in my KS 336 here in a bit to get a better grasp. I might be buying Celestion IRs tonight as well. I think it's able to run one amp through 2 IRs, I'd love to get a V30/Creamback 75 4x12 going.

Also included: a Wampler Tumnus in a Klon Enclosure vs the Helix Stomp. Note that they are essentially the same size. I put them on a Temple Audio Solo 18 Board for reference as well. They packed most of the Helix into it.

Happy NPD! Great that so far it’s delivering.

Given the size I think it might fit on top of my big box DMM lol

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

From what I’ve heard you are limited to 6 model blocks per preset. That’s enough for most guitarists.

It has the Helix models, which I think are great. It has 1/2 the DSP of the Helix.

I’ve had the Helix Floor since June 2017. It’s an amazing piece of gear.

Glad you like it.

The blocks limitation concerns me a bit to use as standalone. Do amps and cabs/IRs take one block each?

If that’s the case my base clean sound which includes delay, reverb, comp would use 5 which only leaves space for another effect. So I wouldn’t be able to add phaser+distortion for example.

Yeah, you have 6 blocks per preset, but you don't have access to all of them in a live setting unless you add more switches. So you have to get used to them being 'always on'. This would be great for recording, but not so perfect for live playing.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

Amps, cabs, and IRs occupy blocks. Remember that it has an effects loop to chain other pedals. The Superlead, BE 100, Engl, and Bogner amps sound killer with my les paul. Excellent tone out of my headphones and HS8s. I rarely run more than 3-4 pedals, so far, I'm happy. Helix Edit still needs an update in order to upload third party IRs. I already have Celestions on deck. I expect the tone to only get better. I've been busy over the last couple of days, so I haven't ran my KS 336 through it. Very happy with my Strat and Les Paul tones. Just have to run the teles and semi hollows.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

That's very cool!

Unfortunately the effect limit might be a dealbreaker for me. This is my current board, give or take:

Into a 5e3 or Princeton.

It's not very big or complicated but like I said I always have 3 pedals on so I would only have one slot left for dirt. If I use the loop I only get an extra effect or lose the programmability.

I'm thinking the Headrush Gigboard might be a better match for me given the number of effects and the amp models.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

I had one on backorder and it showed up last Friday. Didn't have the time to mess with it until yesterday though.

Like others have said, it sounds just like a Helix, but for some odd reason, I'm liking the stock cabs in the Stomp better than I do in my Helix Rack. Maybe it's just in my head, who knows. Or maybe it's because I'm willing to compromise in order to conserve blocks. But, either way, it's good, since I primarily bought it for it's size. I drive truck, and I haven't been satisfied with little practice amps, and using my Rack or my laptop/interface/Helix Native setup is a PITA in a sleeper cab. The Stomp, however, is perfect. Yeah, I'm still getting my head around being limited to 3 switches, but I'll get used to it.

I can also see myself getting a Powercab Plus to go with it for going to a jam, bedroom playing, ect. Seems like it'd be a handy rig. And I can also see myself building a small board around it with a couple stomps that sound better than a couple effects I don't like in the Helix (pitch and rotary), and just leaving my Rack at home and not at my Drummer's house. Because I really only use 3 amp tones and a couple effects with the band I'm currently in, so the Rack is sheer overkill.

Thanks for your review.

So if you use the stock cab it doesn't take an extra block? So it's just one block for amp+stock cab?

Re the buttons I'm not too concerned, worst case scenario you could plug in a Boss FS-7 and assign it to preset/bank up/down no?

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

Yes, you probably can add footswitches. I think you can add exp pedals that turn on when you go past a certain point (so you don't waste a footswitch to turn the wah on). So adding pedals makes the footprint bigger.

Yep, I'm using amp + cab blocks to save blocks.

Yep, you can add footswitches with the EXP jacks. In fact, the first thing I asked the Line 6 guys on the official Helix FB group was of a guy could add a couple switches and use them to scroll through the Snapshots. The answer was yes. So that would free up the other buttons for stomps or presets.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

Another thought I've had is to write some 4CM patches, velcro the Stomp to the top of the amp, and run it remotely with a MIDI controller. A little Morningstar MC6 would be about ideal for this.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

If you guys are worried about being able to run and switch >3 effects per preset, why not just get the Helix LT? Once you add external switches and an expression pedal you've probably lost half the price difference for something with less than half the processing power.

This really seems to be made for players who don't use many effects but want high-end amp modeling. For that type of player, this is an amazing deal, but if you're already hoping for more switches, you should get the LT.

Well, imy case, it's all about the size. The other stuff I've talked about is me pondering what else a guy could do with it. And if I do end up building a pedalboard around it, I already have most of the pedals laying around I'd use. My Dunlop Jerry Cantrell wah (I like it better than any of the ones in the Helix anyway), one of my Wylde Overdrives (I have a couple and it's not a model in the Helix), and maybe my Duncan 805 (also not in the Helix), and I already have a Voodoo Labs ISO5. The only thing I'd buy is a good rotary speaker pedal and maybe a mini POG. I don't like the rotary effects in the Helix, so I've been looking at buying a pedal for that anyway to throw in one of the loops of my Helix Rack and I don't like the Helix pitch effects, so that's what the mini POG would be for. I do have a POG2 in a loop of my Rack, but it's huge, and I really don't use the extra octaves it has very much.

I guess the sweet spot for me would be somewhere between the 3 buttons of the stomp and the 12 buttons of the lt :)

I'm happy with the 5 in my MS-3. I think the stomp with and FS6/7 Might do it.

Or the Gigboard with 4...

Yeah that makes sense. I never had much of a pedal collection so I lack the reference point for most of the effects. The reverbs are all too much for me so I tend to use the legacy ones and dial the mix way down.

I love the amp models though. The 5150 (PV Panama), ENGL and modified JCM800 most of all. I've found the combined amp-cab blocks usually sound great right away. I'm only picky about the mics for some reason.

Re: HX Stomp - this might be it

I would love try one of those HX Stomp with my Stealth Power amp, that would make a crazy small and portable rig. If only speaker cabs had wheels and a handle like modern luggage.
