Well, folks... looks like I haven't done such a great job with this, so let me walk away the green mile and let's do the "let's get it over with" vote.

But... really, do we REALLY need to vote? For the first time since last year there actually is a consensus. And that's everybody wants a neck version of the '59/Custom, made by the Custom Shop with no other premises than that simple description.

But, as a condition to get this done, I was specifically told that only the winner of the vote will be made, so... that's what's I'm doing now.

Proposal#1: underwound '59/Custom

Proposal#2: PG/Perpetual Burn

Proposal#3: Custom Shop made '59/Custom NECK version

That's it folks. The vote will be open for 10 days from now, then I'll be handing over the result to Scott, which will take it from there.

I've been contacted by PM by several forumites offering themselves to do the testing, but the decision about that was never up to me.

I myself got in touch with a local Luthier which gently offered one of their top-of-the-line guitars to host the p'up set, a local boutique amp maker offering his top-of-the-line combo for the occasion and one local Recording Studio, offering not only the necessary studio time to do the testing, but also providing a video crew to record, edit and process the resulting file/s making'em "You Tube" friendly with the highest possible sound quality.

To these folks of my neck of woods this whole thing is considered a big deal, so I'm pretty positive all will do their best and then some.

But, if for logistic reasons is better to keep it on american soil, so be it.

So, people; do your thing and let's get this p'up home once and for all!

Yours very truly,

I'm the first vote, which means I'm currently the vastly-ruling majority.

Actually

I should say that the neck pickup companion to the 59/Custom is something that's already been submitted to the company as an idea, but I'm not sure how much traction it's getting. If it were to win the forum pickup contest, we might see it become a production model.

Just sayin'.

I'm with all of you. After all is said and done, if a neck companion to the 59/Custom hybrid is what's desired, then let's just let the pros at the Custom shop do what they do best.

I like the idea of the Pearly Gates / Perpetual Burn. But I can make that myself. :D

Guess I'm not getting my JB/JB hybrid this year. I was really hoping to pair it with the Jazz/Jazz hybrid neck pickup I made

Dude, throw an A5 magnet in those hybrids . . . I think you'll be astounded.

It's kind of funny but I actually made a JazzB screw coil and JazzN screw coil for a hybrid so I could use hex poles. A lot of work just to get 12 adjustable screws but worth it,

^^
All that's left to do is to cut them flush with the baseplate.

I think the idea of a pickup that can become part of the production line sounds like the best Idea......I have voted #3 because of that.

I didn't know about the possibility of a '59/Custom neck model to become part of the production line at the moment I voted, but if this happens, it'll be a great feeling knowing you've been part of the process. ;)

I made this all sticky.

That's because you've never been in contact with boutique winders. You have no idea what they're capable of, as they don't have the burden of having a production cost analisys, only their own time for R&D and the actual winding.

That's not true, strictly speaking. Several boutique winders participate on other guitar forums. And the SD Custom Shop doesn't count? I've bought from them numerous times.

You ask for something subjective, they give you something subjective in return. Maybe over time they could even learn what you specifically consider a woody tone, but it's impossible to learn what an entire forum thinks a woody tone is, because an entire forum could never agree on such a thing.

We/you/anybody will probably always get the best result if we A) ask them to use their best judgement, so that the winder isn't burdened with subjective adjectives and expectations in the first place, or B) ask for a straight under/overwind so that at least everyone knows with certainty what is being bought and sold, or C) talk about pickups in their realistic electronic terms such as their Q factor, inductance or peak resonance, because while it might be hard to nail specific values, it's still more capable of being commonly understood than adjective soup.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Is the host guitar a Gibson style guitar or a Fender style guitar? Based on the fact that the conversation revolves around the 59/C, a Pickup derived from Gibson oriented designs I would assume that we are looking at a Les Paul / SG style guitar. I understand that you can load any guitar with any pickup but for reference and inspiration's sake, it would help to know that side of the story

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Can I ask what everyone is hoping for when they say they want a neck pickup to go with the 59/Custom hybrid? SD has numerous pickups that can pair well with the 59/Custom hybrid, so what specifically are we looking for (ie more dynamics, more sparkle, less boom, less mid scoop, etc). I think in past forum builds we at least had something in mind tonally that we were hoping to get and MJ took the reins from there. To me, I don't understand what this pickup is hoping to achieve besides being a hybrid in the 59/Custom format.
