Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Is the host guitar a Gibson style guitar or a Fender style guitar? Based on the fact that the conversation revolves around the 59/C, a Pickup derived from Gibson oriented designs I would assume that we are looking at a Les Paul / SG style guitar. I understand that you can load any guitar with any pickup but for reference and inspiration's sake, it would help to know that side of the story
There is no specific host guitar. This is the vote for this year's forum pickup, so it may be lots of guitars.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Can I ask what everyone is hoping for when they say they want a neck pickup to go with the 59/Custom hybrid? SD has numerous pickups that can pair well with the 59/Custom hybrid, so what specifically are we looking for (ie more dynamics, more sparkle, less boom, less mid scoop, etc). I think in past forum builds we at least had something in mind tonally that we were hoping to get and MJ took the reins from there. To me, I don't understand what this pickup is hoping to achieve besides being a hybrid in the 59/Custom format.

The hybrid unbalanced coils give a pickup a harmonic complexity that is unique.
I think what a number of us want is simply a neck pickup companion with that complexity for the 59/custom bridge.
Add to that the 2 coils react differently when split and you have a pickup that is super versatile with the proper switching when paired with a similar bucker or a single in the middle between 2 of them but looks like a conventional humbucker.

In theory, saturday 20th of June... although looking at the poll, it's hard to imagine the winner NOT being option #3, if you ask me. ;)
Agreed.

Now, as a side bet, I will not be shocked in any way, shape, or form if what Derek and MJ do is take a '59 neck coil and create a Custom neck coil.

Derek and MJ, if you're listening... If that is indeed what you do, does it inherently mean that a Custom neck would be created as a byproduct? If so, would you market that?

That's basically my issue with it at this point but I'm willing to get over it: both of those would make great floor models, but Custom Shop? Not starting anything, I'm rolling with whatever goes.

And just because that custom coil would sound good paired with a 59 coil, doesn't mean it would sound good with a matching coil inherently. Could work and is worth trying though.

Could work? You really think that MJ would let anything out that didn't work? Give her some credit she managed to make that abortion that became the fugly sound good. She can do this

Fixed. Abortions mean it was never born lol.

So far, I have the 59/Custom in two guitars - a LP and a SG and have tried the Jazz, the 59, and the WLH and wasn't satisfied with any of them. I'm tempting to go with a 36 Anniversary next when this topic came up last year. While this is slightly off topic, another board member made a statement, I'd like to ask for some opinions.

"Can I ask what everyone is hoping for when they say they want a neck pickup to go with the 59/Custom hybrid? SD has numerous pickups that can pair well with the 59/Custom hybrid."

Specifically, what pickups, in your opinion, pair well with the 59/Custom? And please give some give some thoughts explaining your choices.

I think the word you were looking for was "abomination". ;)

Nope not at all, an abomination is something vile and detestable. The Fugly incident was a deliberate action to debase and taint a process. Hence the word choice.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Due to lack of consistant computer access, Ive not been involved in much of this, this time around.. Im kinda suprised to see everyone is going the simple route this time.. BUT, I really LOVE my 59/custom hybrid, so I think it would be amazing to have calibrated neck version of it.. Esp since I have such a hard time matching neck pups to bridge pups..

Of course, having this come around again makes me sad I sold my crazy 8. Sold the guitar it was in and didnt have a chance to swap it out before selling

You misunderstood what I was saying. What I was saying was that if MJ did as GilmourD suggested and paired a 59 coil with a tweaked Custom coil so that we have the neck hybrid we want, that simply taking that tweaked coil and matching it with itself to make a "Custom neck humbucker" on it's own would not be a sure fire good pickup if left at that; but like I said, it could work.

Like the other way around, making a Custom neck humbucker to match the Custom bridge and just taking a coil from that and putting it with a 59 coil wouldn't be a guarantee that it's great or would give us what we are asking for either. Some hybrids are great, some are ok, some are unlistenable: all depending on what makes it up. It has nothing to do with MJs skills because it is just pairing existing coils, it either works well or it doesn't. The only way it would work is if they designed the coil that gets matched with the 59 to make the Forum hybrid to ALSO be good when paired with a counterpart version of itself, and at that point it wouldn't be a "byproduct" anymore. Get me?

And.... thats actually a pretty cool way to go actually! If they could make a pickup on its own to match the Custom bridge that could also work wonders as a hybrid, that'd be a feat. And that'd be 2 new neck pickup options

Well, what if they created the Custom Neck first, got it right, and then made the hybrid? ;)

Edit: I scrolled further and see that you already said what I said.

IME, the most suitable neck companion for the Custom 5 in all guitars I've tried'em in but my own, is the Jazz bridge.

In my own all-maple 335 copy, the best match was the '59n, although at the time my Custom was already A8 modded, so it got A4 modded, and this combo was my main one for over four years, until I started with my Smooth Jazz project.

HTH,

There will be a bridge, no? That's the pickup I could be jonesing for... (of course, depending on the specs)
