Can I assume this pickup will be ready before we start on the 2016 pickup?

The vote is running until June 20th, as per LtK. After that the timeframe is up to the Custom Shop.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Yeah i get where you are coming from but at the same time i already pointed out where there is large room for confusion. I'm also suspecting iam not the only person who read it the way i did as there hasnt been any discussion of a matching bridge pickup since that post.
It could have been worded a ton better and maybe things would have gone differently. Its talking about "new original" and "based off the 59/C" ... so which is it? Those 2 things are in contradiction with each other.
The previous poll doesnt really cement anything unless you include the greater context of what was discussed between the 2 votes.
Either way this is all moot... there is no bridge pickup this time around. Doesnt matter if it was discussed before or not.
The "original" part meant "not using any coils from an already existing pickup" as the idea of creating a Custom neck and then using one of its' coils to combine with the '59 neck had already been shot down.
The "based on" part was simply giving ourselves and the CS a starting point, explaining what the pickup would do differently instead.

The bridge wasn't further elaborated because at the time we were still in the ZeBro/HyBro discussion so hammering down any specifics would be a moot point. Then, once we did we suddenly jumped into another incoherent set of polls that simply ignored that part.

In any case, I agree that by now it is indeed a moot point so I just wish all of you to get the pickup you've been hoping for.

I know it was thrown around more than once over the course of the discussion.

A tonal match for the 59/C could conceivably yield a new bridge pickup, especially if they go the hybrid route for the neck, and then make a bridge pickup based on a pair of the stronger coils. There were quite a few votes originally for a medium-hot bridge pickup, and that would fill that gap as well.

I'm still a little confused. Isn't the 59/C Neck model's "tonal match" the stock 59/C Bridge model, since that's what it is being designed to match? :dunno: Also, what "stronger" coils are you referring to?

For those wanting a "medium-hot" hybrid bridge pickup based on a hotter 59/C, wouldn't it make some sense to try a Ceramic or A8 mag in the stock 59/Custom bridge? Technically, the "59/Custom" is a "59/Custom 5" hybrid with the stock A5. A simple mag change might do the trick without Custom Shop prices. You could have a "59/Custom 8" hybrid (alnico 8) or a true "59/Custom" model (ceramic) for less than $5!

If you insist on paying Custom Shop prices for a new bridge hybrid, maybe a 78/JB hybrid would be interesting.

LTKOJAK - Any chance you could throw in a side request for a new hybrid bridge pickup for these guys, just to see if the Custom Shop would consider it? I guess it couldn't hurt. If they make it, both sides win...those wanting a true 59/C Neck model get theirs and those who want a hotter 59/C bridge get theirs, too.

P.S.- We should totally scrap all of this nonsense and ask for a Slug/Parallel Axis hybrid set...we can call them the "Sluglybuckers". I know, I'm a genius :) Ha ha! Totally kidding!

What about something like an ALT-C bridge basically alternate custom. Retain one custom coil and have MJ add a new coil to hit their tonal target. Still would have to match the new 59/C neck but could be a variation.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Tell the Custom Shop:

"For this year's forum pickup design, we have officially decided on the 2015 'Hy-Bro' Set! The Hy-Bro 'Neck' pickup is requested to be a hybrid model designed as the ideal neck-position companion to the existing '59/Custom' bridge model. The Hy-Bro 'Bridge' is requested to also be of a hybrid design, but with a focus on delivering increased output and a slightly 'hotter' response than the existing 59/Custom bridge model. We leave the specifics of the new 'Hy-Bro' designs up to you and look forward to what you create!"

By the way, found this at JMI Music on eBay:

It's a Pearly Gates/JB hybrid with a Ceramic magnet!

Is it possible the "Hy-Bro" Bridge already exists? :scratchch

Even though I'm not of the resistance = output camp, I think this would illustrate it:

59/C = 4k-ish 59 coil, 7k-ish Custom coil, total 13k

The new Neck humbucker, if a hybrid, could be a 3.5k-ish underwound 59 (or something else) coil and a 6k-ish underwound Custom (or something else) coil.
Then a new bridge humbucker could be made from a pair of the 6k-ish coils, making a new 12k-ish bridge humbucker.

This is, of course, if the new neck humbucker itself was a hybrid of two mismatched coils.

I have to wonder, with the Distortion Neck (which started life as a bridge pickup), the Perpetual Burn and now the Pegasus all in the 12K to 12.7K range, if at least one of those is essentially the "underwound Custom" you're looking for as far as the coils are concerned (magnets differ, of course).

As for the forum pickup design, I think the beauty of the "Hy-Bro" concept is adherence to the "hy-brid" design and, at least in my opinion, that goes for any possible co-designed bridge pickup, as well.

Agreed, but I'd even suggest a 3.5K coil and a 5K coil. In the neck hybrids I've made, .5K difference between them creates a lot more high end (which is what I'm after), so much so that I can use warm magnets (A2 and UOA5) and still get more treble and bite than any other HB with balanced coils. In my experiments, a bigger mismatch between coils is more about adding treble than it is adding output.

I like the idea of adding treble for a neck humbucker. My favorite neck pickups have always been really bright.

PB sounds like an underwound JB to me. Not sure if the Pegasus and Distortion Neck have that "PAF" sound. Output wise they may be in the range, but voicing they could be way off.

Suddenly everybody is a p'up designer now?

I wonder ho many of you have actually spin some wire on a bobbin, and what the outcome was?

Now that sounds like an interesting hybrid! I may have to check this one out.

I'm still liking the "Burning Gates" idea... might have to keep that on the back burner, so to speak.

Re: Hy-Bro 2015 p'up: "Let's get it over with" vote

Ditto, I liked the idea BEFORE I read it was Frank Falbo's!!!

How about that being the "starting point" for the bridge HyBro version of the set :9:
